- Griffin McGovren also had a huge interception deep in Brown territory in the third quarter.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Cornell went up 9-0 in the first seven minutes with a blocked punt for a safety, and an eight-yard touchdown rush.
- Brown responded with a nine play, 75-yard drive, capped by a Perry four-yard touchdown run up the middle to get on the board at 9-7. The score was set up by a big 28-yard reception down the left sideline by Rockett.
- Brown got a big stop on 4th-and-1 at the Cornell 43 when Ethan Royer and Gafa stuffed a run up the middle. The Bears quickly turned the stop into points, scoring four plays later on a big 18-yard scamper by Franzoni for his first career touchdown to pull within 16-14 with 11:42 remaining.
- Brown grabbed its first lead, 21-16 with 5:38 to go in the half with a nine-yard strike on third down from Perry to Sutton. The drive was spurred by another big 18-yard catch at midfield by Rockett, and a 22-yard, third down run off a direct snap by Smith.
- Cornell used a big kickoff return and quickly retook the lead two plays later, giving them a 23-21 lead they carried into the locker room.
- Brown drove the Cornell offense backwards to open the half, setting up great field position at the Cornell 42-yard line following the punt. Seven plays later, Perry found Sutton 18 yards over the middle in the end zone for his second touchdown of the day to push the Bears back in front 28-23.
- Sutton put the Bears back in front 35-30 with his third score of the game, coming on a 19-yard catch-and-run with 7:38 to go. Brown converted a trio of third down chances, and a 4th-and-1 on the drive.
- Cornell went back up 38-35 after converting a 22-yard pass for a touchdown on fourth down, and the ensuing two-point conversion.
- DeLucia came through for the Bears on their next drive, breaking a tackle on a 3rd-and-1 run up the middle and turned it into a 56-yard run to paydirt to give the Bears the 42-38 lead with 2:27 left.
- The Big Red answered back in just three plays on a 50-yard, then 25-yard touchdown pass to go up by three with 1:59 left.
- On Brown's final drive, Perry completed a five-yard pass on 3rd-and-5 to set up first down at the Cornell 35. Perry then rushed for 13 yards on first down, then found Mark Mahoney for a 22-yard strike on the following play to set up first down at the Cornell 30 with less than one minute remaining. On the next play, Perry stepped up and threw a pass to Walker, who outjumped the defender in the front-left corner of the end zone for what proved to be the game-winning touchdown with 29 seconds left.
- The defense made the points stand up, knocking down a hail mary pass from the Cornell 42-yard line as time expired.
POSTGAME QUOTES
Head Coach James Perry
- "This is as proud as I've ever been of a team that I've coached. We never point fingers. In the first half, the defense picked us up, there were times when special teams picked us up, and then in at the end the offense did a good job."
- "It was a great example of Brown Football. Nobody flinched on the sideline when they scored. Our defense throughout the day played very well. There was a tremendous amount of confidence coming from E.J., and then to lead us down the field and score there was terrific."
- "For our defense to respond as we were turning the ball over and getting the punt blocked, I think the kids fed off that. In the second half we were able to move the ball a bit better, and our guys were still feeding off that. This was a team effort and a team win."
- "The call came in and I knew what I had to do, and that is how we run this offense. You know your role and what you have to do and what is expected. The linemen gave E.J. time and he threw a perfect ball. We as a receiving group had a great day and it was an awesome way to cap it off."
The Bears will hit the road once again next Saturday, Oct. 30 with a trip to Penn. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. on ESPN+ and AM 790 WPRV Radio.
