
Brown Athletics Hosts Paralympic Medalist, Former Navy SEAL Dan Cnossen January 12

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown University athletics is set to host two-time Paralympian, six-time Paralympic medalist, and former Navy SEAL Dan Cnossen for a virtual event as part of Brown's Quiet Period Event Schedule on Tuesday, January 12 at 6:00 p.m.

A two-time Paralympian (2014, 2018) who competes in biathlon and cross country skiing, he has won six medals (one gold, four silver, and 1 bronze). At the PyeongChang 2018 Paralympic Winter Games, he captured gold in the 7.5km biathlon, silver in the 12.5km biathlon, 15km cross-country, 15km biathlon, and 7.5km cross-country, and bronze in the cross-country sprint. At the Sochi 2014 Paralympic Winter Games, he took sixth in the cross-country sprint, 10th in the biathlon individual and 10km cross-country, 11th in the biathlon middle-distance, 13th in the 15km cross-country, and 14th in the biathlon sprint.

Lt. Cmdr. Cnossen was serving as the platoon commander for SEAL Team One in Afghanistan in September 2009 when he stepped on an IED (improvised explosive device) and was wounded in the explosion. The accident caused him to lose both his legs just above the knee. Cnossen went through rehabilitation first at the Bethesda National Naval Medical Center and later at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, where he learned to walk with his new prosthetics. Cnossen was awarded both a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star with Valor from the Secretary of the Navy for his service in combat.

A native of Topeka, Kan., who grew up on a fifth-generation family farm, he earned a bachelor's degree from the United States Naval Academy in 2002 prior to gaining a master's degree from Harvard University in 2018.
