CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Brown women's swimming & diving team was defeated by Harvard, 184.5-110.5, on Wednesday at Blodgett Pool. The Bears were led by senior Marley Cross (Seattle, Wash.) and sophomore Miku Takabayashi (Glastonbury, Conn.) who recorded victories in the 100 freestyle and 400 IM, respectively.
"It's great to be back underway with racing for the back stretch of our season," said head coach Kate Kovenock. "Performance-wise, momentum started to build for us about a third of the way into the meet. You want a team that will dig in and fight. We found a way to do that today against the defending league champion. With that said, being ready and tuned up right from the start will be key for Saturday's dual."
The 200 medley relay team of freshman Sage Matsushima (Huntington Beach, Calif.), sophomore Audrey Lukawski (San Francisco, Calif.), junior Han Nguyen (Los Gatos, Calif.) and Cross began the day with a third-place swim of 1:46.25.
Sophomore Emma Whall (Dover, N.H.) opened the individual portion with a second-place showing in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 10:28.70 while senior Julia Armitage (Cleveland Heights, Ohio) followed in third (10:30.06).
Freshman Audrey Orange (New York City, N.Y.) led the Bears in the 200 freestyle, touching the wall in third (1:51.59) while Takabayashi grabbed fifth (1:52.80).
Senior Sarah Welch (Beverly, Mass.) and Matsushima went 3-4 in the 100 backstroke with times of 57.64 and 57.78, respectively. Welch later took second in the 200 back with a time of 2:02.10 while sophomore Victoria Gong (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) (2:09.40, fourth) and junior Deanne Umbay (North Hills, Calif.) (2:11.61, fifth) followed.
Lukawski took second in both breaststroke events with a 1:05.40 in the 100 and a 2:19.30 in the 200. Freshman Sasha Liu (Piedmont, Calif.) finish fifth in the 100 (1:07.40) while Takabayashi took fifth in the 200 (2:26.03).
Freshman Nell Chidley (Mystic, Conn.) paced the Bears in the 200 butterfly in third place (2:02.77) and sophomore Caylene Rippon (Hershey, Pa.) followed in fifth (2:06.89).
Brown took three of the top-five spots in the 50 freestyle with junior Taylor Seaman (Brighton, Mich.) leading the group in second (23.89) while junior Tory Center (Madison, Wis.) (23.97, third) and Cross (24.12, fifth) followed. The Bears had another strong showing in the 100 freestyle with Cross winning the race in 51.48 and Seaman (51.66) and Center (52.64) finishing in third and fifth, respectively.
Sophomore Liv Mitchell (Laguna Beach, Calif.) led the Bears on the 3M board with a score of 263.25 for fifth. Junior Julia Feord (Royal Oak, Mich.) also contributed points in the 3M in sixth with a mark of 233.25. Feord came back to claim third in the 1M with a score of 253.80 while Mitchell took seventh (238.73).
Orange finished second in the 500 freestyle in 4:58.69 with senior Amelia Gilchrist (Greensboro, N.C.) (5:03.96, fourth) and Chidley (5:12.29, fifth) behind her.
Nguyen and Matsushima went 2-4 in the 100 butterfly with times of 55.85 and 56.96, respectively.
Brown took the top-three spots in the 400 IM with Takabayashi winning the race in 4:26.23 and Welch (4:30.27, second) and Whall (4:30.99) rounding out the final.
Seaman, Center, Orange and Cross closed the meet by winning the 400 freestyle relay in 3:26.54.
The Bears next host Columbia for their final home meet of the regular season and Senior Day on Saturday, Jan. 18 at 12:00 p.m.
