Women’s Rugby Topples AIC, 54-19

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Brown women's rugby team defeated American International, 54-19, on Saturday at Ronald J. Abdow Field. Junior Karina Wang (Ottawa, Ontario), freshman Mahdia Parker (Harlem, N.Y.) and senior Abby O'Keefe (St. Louis, Mo.) all registered two tries apiece to lead the Bears.
"The team came out on all cylinders and we were able to play our whole bench," said head coach Kathy Flores. "I feel like we are hitting our stride but we are still staying hungry."
Wang scored the first try of the game to give Brown (2-2, 2-1 Tier II) a 7-0 advantage. O'Keefe then made her second consecutive assist, this time with a score by Parker for a 14-0 lead.
A strong swipe in the lineout from sophomore Johanna Bandler (Norwich, Vt) gaining possession for Brown preceded another score by Parker to run up the Bears' lead, 21-0.
Sophomore Zy Thomas (Fairfield, Calif.) next added a try following a scrum before AIC (1-2, 1-2 Tier II) got on the board to bring the match to 28-7 at the break.
O'Keefe opened the second half with a try to increase Brown's lead to 35-7. A try by Wang, her second of the day, split up two AIC scores to bring the contest to 42-19.
Senior Jenna Soenksen's (Encinitas, Calif.) prop try made it 47-19 and O'Keefe closed the scoring with her second of the match for the 54-19 win.
Defensively, senior Alexandria Simon (Kaunakakai, Hawaii) and freshman Erin Jessop (Ashland, Mass.) made contributions throughout the match.
Brown will next competed at Sacred Heart on Saturday, Sept. 28 starting at 11:00 a.m.
