
Ehlert, Hallal Earn Brown Student-Athlete of the Week Honors

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Volleyball senior outside hitter Makena Ehlert and men's water polo junior goalkeeper Riad Hallal have earned Brown University Athletics Student-Athlete of the Week honors for the week of Sept. 9-15, Brown announced on Monday.

Makena Ehlert, Volleyball, Senior, Orange County, Calif.
Senior outside hitter Makena Ehlert recorded 40 kills (3.64 per set) and 35 digs (3.18 per set), while earning Tournament MVP honors as Brown won the Friar Classic behind a 3-0 weekend. A native of Orange County, Calif., she posted a pair of double-doubles on the weekend. Ehlert tallied 12 kills on .360 hitting alongside 11 digs in a 3-0 win over Coppin State prior to totaling 16 kills and 15 digs in a 3-2 win at tournament host Providence. She added 12 kills on .429 hitting and nine digs in a 3-0 win over Fairleigh Dickinson. Ehlert has aided Brown to a 6-1 start – its best start since 2008 (8-1).

Riad Hallal, Men's Water Polo, Junior, Coronado, Calif.
Junior goalkeeper Riad Hallal made 54 saves (13.5 per game) last week, helping Brown post a 2-2 record at the Princeton Invitational. A native of Coronado, Calif., Hallal stopped 16 shots against No. 15 George Washington and totaled double-digit saves in all four games on the weekend. He tallied 13 saves in a 15-11 win over Navy, turned aside 13 shots against No. 14 Bucknell, and blocked 12 shots in a 10-7 win over Wagner. Hallal has helped the Bears begin the 2019 season with a 7-3 record.
