PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown University volleyball team defeated Coppin State, 3-0, in the first day of the Friar Classic on Friday night at Alumni Hall. The Bears bested the Eagles with scores of 25-14, 25-17 and 25-20 for their first sweep of the season.
"I thought it was a strong start to this weekend's tournament," Brown head coach Ahen Kim said. "We started to show some signs of maturity to side out in our last match Sunday, and it's good to see that carry into a new weekend. Our serving and passing was strong today, and it just continues to give our team opportunities to set up the offense."
Senior Makena Ehlert (Orange County, Calif.) and junior Gabrielle Moriconi (Naples, Fla.) paced Brown (4-1) with 12 kills apiece, with Ehlert reaching double-digit kills for the fifth time this season. Ehlert also led the Bears in digs (11) for her third double-double of 2019. Sophomore Kristin Sellers (Menlo Park, Calif.) contributed 26 assists, her fifth match of the season reaching the 20-assist mark.
"I think that Gabrielle had a really stellar offensive game for us today, and a lot of opportunities were created by Kristin," Kim said. "What really gave us life was our freshman Kaitlyn Wong. She was able to dig some balls at key moments, and it brought us a lot of life and a new dimension to our team."
The Bears broke away in the first set early on, gaining a 10-3 lead, aided by four kills from Ehlert. Brown prevented Coppin State (2-5) from scoring back-to-back points until the end of the stanza (24-14) when the set was out of reach.
The Eagles had an early lead in set two, but the Bears battled back for an 8-7 lead on a kill by Moriconi. Moriconi then added two more kills in a four-point swing to build a 12-7 advantage. Two more four-point runs followed to build a comfortable 20-10 lead. Moriconi finished her strong set with two more kills for the 25-17 win.
Back-to-back service aces by Sellers got the Bears going to start the third set. The two teams traded points with the Eagles holding their last lead at 11-10 before four straight points by the Bears, which included a kill from Ehlert and an ace by Moriconi. Coppin State came back to tie the set, 14-14, but three-consecutive points built a 17-14 advantage, and the Bears would never trail again en route to their 25-20 set win and 3-0 match triumph.
For Coppin State, Miajavon Coleman led the team in kills with nine while Ashley Roman added 12 digs defensively.
Next, Brown continues play at the Friar Classic tomorrow – Saturday, Sept. 14 – facing Fairleigh Dickinson (11:00 a.m.) and host Providence College (5:30 p.m.).
