
Women’s Crew’s Madden ’18 Helps U.S. Double Scull Qualify for 2020 Olympics

LINZ-OTTENSHEIM, Austria – Brown University women's crew alumna Cicely Madden '18 helped USRowing's women's double scull qualify for the 2020 Olympic Games through a fifth-place finish at the 2019 World Rowing Championships from August 25 to September 1 in Linz-Ottensheim, Austria.
A native of Weston, Mass., Madden and teammate Gevvie Stone – a silver medalist at the 2016 Rio Olympics in the women's single scull – helped the U.S. qualify for the Tokyo Games in the double scull via a fifth-place finish in the A final. USRowing will determine individuals for the Olympic boat in the run-up to the 2020 Games.
Competing in the A final on Sunday, the duo came within 0.640 seconds of a medal, finishing with a time of 6:49.860. Madden and Stone trailed third-place Netherlands (6:49.220) by 0.640 seconds and fourth-place Canada (6:49.850) by 0.010 seconds. The U.S. topped France (6:52.090) by 2.230 seconds. New Zealand won the race in 6:47.170, and Romania took silver in 6:48.550.
In their semifinal race on Aug. 30, Madden and Stone placed third in A/B semifinal two, advancing to the A final and qualifying the boat for the 2020 Olympic Games. In the race, the pair came in at 6:58.530, trailing first-place Romania (6:56.600) by 1.930 seconds and second-place France (6:57.920) by 0.610 seconds. The U.S. topped Australia (6:59.140) by 0.610 seconds as well as Belarus (7:00.780) and Italy (7:03.890).
The duo began the world championships on Monday, Aug. 26 with a victory in heat four, advancing directly to the semifinals and clocking the fastest time of the heats in the women's double scull event. The U.S. boat won with a time of 6:56.360, topping Canada (6:58.630) by 2.270 seconds as well as Italy (7:01.220), Lithuania (7:02.850), and the Ukraine (7:20.580).

Earlier this year, Madden and Stone captured a silver medal at the 2019 World Rowing Cup II in Poznan, Poland in June. The duo won the women's double scull event at the 2019 U.S. Speed Trials II in May, earning its spot at the 2019 World Championships.
During her time at Brown, Madden concluded her career as a four-time All-Ivy honoree, a two-time All-American – including a First Team selection in 2017 – and a two-time competitor at the U23 World Championships. Brown's 2018 NCAA Woman of the Year Award nominee, Madden competed with the first varsity eight in all 53 career spring races.
She helped Brown win three Ivy League team titles (2015, 2016, 2017) and finish in the top 10 at the NCAA Championships in all four years. The Bears remain one of three teams to qualify for all 23 NCAA Championships since the event's inception.
