PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown University athletics announced that John Furtado has been named the Bears' Director of Sports Medicine and Erin Variano an Associate Head Athletic Trainer.
Furtado joins the Bears in a newly created position after acting in sports medicine at Princeton from 1996-2019 while Variano comes back to Brown to work primarily with the Bears' football program after serving as an athletic trainer with Navy football from 2015-19. Both Furtado and Variano previously worked at Brown – Furtado as an athletic training intern in 1993-94 and Variano as an assistant athletic trainer from 2011-14.
"We are excited to welcome back both John and Erin to the Brown University community," Brown Director of Athletics Jack Hayes said. "I have no doubt that each of them will make a significant impact on the well-being of our student-athletes and will create an environment of support and care in a critical area of our department."
Furtado spent over 20 years in sports medicine at Princeton, concluding his tenure with the Tigers as the Coordinator of Physical Therapy from 2016-19, working with men's ice hockey, men's and women's volleyball, and women's lightweight crew. Furtado acted in the role of Assistant Athletic Trainer from 1996-2016, working with a variety of sports including hockey, soccer, crew, football, and water polo.
The President of the Athletic Trainers' Society of New Jersey from 2015-17, Furtado won the Athletic Trainer Service Award from the National Athletic Trainers' Association in June 2019.
A native of Fall River, Mass., Furtado earned a master's degree in Exercise Science and Health Promotion from California University of Pennsylvania in 2005 and a bachelor's degree in Physical Therapy from Northeastern University in 1993.
Prior to returning to Brown, Variano acted as an Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Medicine at the U.S. Naval Academy from 2015-19, primarily working with the Midshipmen's football program. She also held secondary responsibilities with Navy's rowing, men's basketball, wrestling, and swimming and diving programs. While at Navy, Variano supervised the department's athletic training interns.
Before Navy, Variano acted as the Director, Sports Medicine at Virginia Tech, working with the Hokies' women's basketball program. She began her first full-time position in the field as an assistant athletic trainer at Brown from 2011-14, working primarily with the Bears' women's basketball and field hockey programs.
A native of Yorktown Heights, N.Y., Variano gained a master's degree in Health and Human Movement from Utah State University in 2011 and a bachelor's degree in Athletic Training from Merrimack College – where she played on the women's lacrosse team – in 2008.
