
Women’s Crew’s Madden ’18 Earns Silver at World Rowing Cup II

POZNAN, Poland – Brown University women's crew alumna Cicely Madden '18 earned a silver medal in the women's double scull at the 2019 World Rowing Cup II in Poznan, Poland on Sunday.
A native of Weston, Mass., Madden and teammate Gevvie Stone – a silver medalist at the 2016 Rio Olympics in the women's single scull – took second place behind a time of 7:21.550 trailing first-place New Zealand (7:21.280) by just 0.270 seconds. Madden and Stone topped Australia (7:23.940), a second boat from the United States (7:24.850), China (7:29.170), and Germany (7:29.660).

On Friday, Madden and Stone won heat one with a time of 6:53.120, besting Italy (7:00.460), Lithuania (7:06.320), Norway (7:13.400), China (7:16.560), and Estonia (7:24.360).
On Saturday, the duo took A/B semifinal one behind a time of 7:20.510, defeating the U.S. second boat (7:24.800), Germany (7:27.450), Canada (7:34.920), France (7:37.240), and Italy (7:43.460).
During her time at Brown, Madden concluded her career as a four-time All-Ivy honoree, a two-time All-American – including a First Team selection in 2017 – and a two-time competitor at the U23 World Championships. Brown's 2018 NCAA Woman of the Year Award nominee, Madden competed with the first varsity eight all 53 career spring races.
She helped Brown win three Ivy League team titles (2015, 2016, 2017) and finish in the top 10 at the NCAA Championships in all four years. The Bears remain one of three teams to qualify for all 23 NCAA Championships since the event's inception.
Madden and Stone are set to represent the United States in the women's double at the 2019 World Rowing Championships – slated for August 25 to September 1 in Ottensheim, Austria – after winning the women's double event at the 2019 U.S. Speed Trials II in May.
