Women’s Crew Progresses All Three Boats to Petite Finals on NCAAs Day Two

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Brown University women's crew progressed all three of its boats – the first varsity eight, second varsity eight, and varsity four – to the petite finals on the second day of racing at the 2019 NCAA Division I Women's Rowing Championships on Saturday morning at the Indianapolis Rowing Center at Eagle Creek Park.

The Bears' second varsity eight placed fourth in its A/B semifinal, coming one place and just 1.320 seconds out of a grand final qualifying spot. Brown's first varsity eight came in fifth in its A/B semifinal, and the varsity four finished sixth in its A/B semifinal. Brown has competed in all 23 NCAA Championships since the event's inception in 1997 and has now sent 65 of its 69 boats to either the petite or grand finals over those 23 years.

"All these crews are excellent," Brown head coach John Murphy said. "We're looking forward to another day of competitive racing tomorrow."

Sunday Finals Outlook

The Bears' seventh-seeded first varsity eight will race out of lane two in the petite final on Sunday at 9:00 a.m. The crew will face – in lane order from one and three to six – ninth-seeded Yale, second-seeded Princeton, 10^th-seeded Iowa, 11^th-seeded Rutgers, and 12^th-seeded Virginia.

Brown's ninth-seeded second varsity eight will compete out of lane four in the petite final at 9:20 a.m. The boat will meet – in lane order from one to three and five to six – 12^th-seeded Indiana, eighth-seeded Princeton, fourth-seeded California, 10^th-seeded Yale, and 14^th-seeded Wisconsin.

The Bears' eighth-seeded A varsity four will race out of lane one in the petite final at 9:40 a.m. Brown will face – in lane order from two to seven – seventh-seeded Duke, sixth-seeded Princeton, 14^th-seeded Rutgers, 10^th-seeded Yale, 12^th-seeded Indiana, and 11^th-seeded Virginia.

Five schools – Michigan, Ohio State, Stanford, Texas, and Washington – qualified all three boats to the grand finals. California (1V8, V4) sent two boats to the grand finals, and Virginia's 2V8 rounded out the 18-boat grand final field.

Semifinal Race Recap

Brown's seventh-seeded first varsity eight placed fifth in A/B semifinal one with a time of 6:46.531 to proceed to the petite final. The Bears topped sixth-place and 12^th-seeded Virginia (6:49.616) by 3.085 seconds, while falling to fourth-place and 10^th-seeded Iowa (6:41.806) by 4.725 seconds. Top-seeded California (6:31.252) won the race, 2.430 seconds ahead of fifth-seeded Texas (6:33.682), as well as sixth-seeded Michigan (6:38.038).

The Bears' ninth-seeded second varsity eight came in fourth place in A/B semifinal two behind a time of 6:59.247, progressing to the petite final after coming within one place and 1.320 seconds of the last grand final qualifying spot. Brown topped eighth-seeded and fifth-place Princeton (7:05.198) by 5.951 seconds as well as 14^th-seeded Wisconsin (7:14.393). The 2V8 improved to 3-2 vs. Princeton on the year and to 2-0 against the Tigers on the weekend.

Third-seeded Stanford (6:51.761) took the race, 2.171 seconds ahead of second-seeded Michigan (6:53.932), in addition to fifth-seeded Virginia (6:57.247), which edged Brown by 1.320 seconds.

Brown's eighth-seeded varsity four finished in sixth place in A/B semifinal one with a time of 7:51.975, progressing to the petite final. The Bears trailed fifth-place and 10^th-seeded Yale (7:51.528) by just 0.447 seconds. Top-seeded Washington (7:35.938) claimed the race, topping third-seeded Texas (7:39.866) by 3.928 seconds as well as fifth-seeded Michigan (7:42.590) and sixth-seeded Princeton (7:47.847).

Due to debris on the course, officials delayed the morning's races and ran the Division I A/B semifinals prior to the C/D semifinals.
