
Women’s Crew Advances All Three Boats to A/B Semifinals on NCAAs Day One

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Brown University women's crew advanced all three of its boats – the first varsity eight, second varsity eight, and A varsity four – to the A/B semifinals to highlight its first day of racing at the 2019 NCAA Division I Women's Rowing Championships on Friday afternoon at the Indianapolis Rowing Center at Eagle Creek Park.
Making their 23rd straight appearance at the NCAA Championships, the Bears' second varsity eight placed second in its heat while the first varsity eight and A varsity four each came in third in its respective heat to propel all three of the program's boats into Saturday's A/B semifinals. Brown stood as one of nine programs to send all of its boats into the A/B semifinals.
"It was a good day, we're happy, and we're looking forward to the semifinals tomorrow," Brown head coach John Murphy said.
Saturday Semifinal Outlook
Brown's seventh-seeded first varsity eight will race in A/B semifinal one out of lane six on Saturday at 8:36 a.m. The Bears will face – in lane order from one to five – 12th-seeded Virginia, 10th-seeded Iowa, top-seeded California, fifth-seeded Texas, and sixth-seeded Michigan.
The Bears' ninth-seeded second varsity eight will compete in A/B semifinal two out of lane two at 9:36 a.m. The crew will meet – in lane order from one and three to six – 14th-seeded Wisconsin, third-seeded Stanford, second-seeded Michigan, fifth-seeded Virginia, and eighth-seeded Princeton.
Brown's eighth-seeded varsity four will race in A/B semifinal one out of lane six at 10:12 a.m. The boat will face – in lane order from one to five – sixth-seeded Princeton, 10th-seeded Yale, third-seeded Texas, top-seeded Washington, and fifth-seeded Michigan.
Brown stood as one of nine programs – out of the 22-school event – to send all three of its boats to the A/B semifinals, alongside California, Michigan, Ohio State, Princeton, Stanford, Texas, Washington, and Yale. Three other schools – Indiana (2V8, V4), Rutgers (1V8, V4), and Virginia (1V8, 2V8) – placed two boats in the A/B semifinals. Iowa's 1V8, Wisconsin's 2V8, and Duke's V4 rounded out the 36-boat A/B semifinal field.
The top three boats in each A/B semifinal advance to their respective grand finals while the rest proceed to their respective petite finals. The top three crews in each C/D semifinal qualify for the C final while the remaining crews compete in the D final.

Brown's seventh-seeded first varsity placed third in heat two out of lane four with a time of 6:19.236 to advance to the A/B semifinals. The Bears came in just 0.949 seconds behind second-place and 10th-seeded Iowa (6:19.236) and 2.465 seconds behind first-place and second-seeded Princeton (6:16.771). Brown topped 15th-seeded Navy (6:25.082) by 5.846 seconds as well as 18th-seeded UCF (6:40.070).
The Bears' ninth-seeded second varsity eight placed second in heat one out of lane two behind a time of 6:25.514, moving to the A/B semifinals. Brown topped eighth-seeded Princeton (6:29.079) by 3.565 seconds and trailed top-seeded Washington (6:19.507) by 6.007 seconds. The Bears improved to 2-2 vs. Princeton on the year while also defeating 16th-seeded UCF (6:41.260) and 17th-seeded Navy (6:44.684).
Brown's eighth-seeded varsity four took third place in heat one out of lane four with a time of 7:17.694 to advance to the A/B semifinals. The Bears topped 16th-seeded Iowa (7:26.819) by 9.125 seconds in addition to 17th-seeded Radcliffe (7:44.006). Top-seeded Washington (7:02.901) won the race, finishing 3.748 seconds ahead of ninth-seeded California (7:06.649), which came in 11.045 seconds ahead of Brown.
Officials delayed the start of the heats to the afternoon due to debris on the course. With the change, Division I eliminated repechage races with the top three boats from each heat progressing to the A/B semifinals and the remaining crews proceeding to the C/D semifinals.
