
Women’s Crew Gains 23rd Consecutive Berth into NCAA Championships

INDIANAPOLIS – Brown University women's crew has earned an at-large bid into the 2019 NCAA Division I Women's Rowing Championships set for the Indianapolis Rowing Center at Eagle Creek Park in Indianapolis, Ind., from May 31 to June 2, the NCAA announced on Tuesday.

Brown will compete in the NCAA Championships for the 23rd consecutive year and stands as one of three programs, along with Princeton and Washington, to take part in all 22 championships since the event's inception in 1997. Under head coach John Murphy the Bears have won seven NCAA titles, with the most recent occurring in 2011.
Brown's first varsity eight gained the No. 7 seed and will race in heat two on Friday, May 31 at 9:12 a.m., facing second-seeded Princeton, 10th-seeded Iowa, 15th-seeded Navy, and 18th-seeded UCF.
The Bears' second varsity eight earned the No. 9 seed and will race in heat one on Friday, May 31 at 9:48 a.m., competing against top-seeded Washington, eighth-seeded Princeton, 16th-seeded UCF, and 17th-seeded Navy.
Brown's A varsity four garnered the No. 8 seed and will race in heat one on Friday, May 31 at 10:36 a.m., meeting top-seeded Washington, ninth-seeded California, 16th-seeded Iowa, and 17th-seeded Radcliffe.
The championship, this year co-hosted by Indiana University, Bloomington and the Indiana Sports Corporation, is composed of 22 teams. Eleven conferences were awarded automatic qualification and the remaining 11 slots were filled with at-large selections to complete the championship field.
Teams qualifying for the championship as an automatic qualifier or as an at-large are required to field two boats of eight rowers and one boat of four rowers. For the first varsity eight, second varsity eight and varsity four, all 22 boats are seeded into four heats.
Brown will enter the championship coming off a second-place team finish at the Ivy League Championship. At the Ivy Championship on Sunday, all six of Brown's boats earned medals on the day with the first varsity eight, second varsity eight, and A varsity four all taking silver. The Bears' C varsity four took gold while the B varsity four and third varsity eight both claimed bronze.
