
No. 5 Seed Women’s Water Polo Bests No. 7 St. Francis in CWPA Consolation, 13-8

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Sophomore Carissa Perez tallied three goals and four assists, while earning Player of the Game honors, as No. 5 seed Brown University women's water polo bested No. 7 seed Saint Francis University (Pa.), 13-8, in a consolation game at the 2019 Collegiate Water Polo Association Championship.
Playing at home in the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center on Saturday afternoon, the Bears (20-13) held leads of 7-3 at halftime and 10-5 through three quarters on their way to the victory over the Red Flash (10-26).
Brown has now recorded its fourth 20-win season in the last six years and has reached 20 wins in seven of 12 seasons under the direction of head coach Felix Mercado. The Bears have won five of their last seven games and will meet No. 6 seed George Washington (6-14) in the consolation on Sunday at 9:00 a.m.
"We had a lot of different players make contributions in today's win," Brown head coach Felix Mercado said. "We're looking forward to closing out our season at home tomorrow and to playing as well as we possibly can in our last game."
Perez (Pico Rivera, Calif.) led the Bears with her seven points on three goals and four assists and now has 13 points on four goals and nine assists in the tournament. Sophomore Kaitlyn Cook (Los Gatos, Calif.) supported her with two goals and two steals.
Sophomore Lily Keck (La Jolla, Calif.) posted two goals, an assist, and a steal while freshman Katie Klein (Lafayette, Calif.) registered two goals and a steal. Freshman Dagmara Czajka (San Diego, Calif.) totaled a goal, two assists, and three steals.
Sophomore Alli Schaum (San Rafael, Calif.) notched a goal and two assists, senior Maigrie McDougal (Sacramento, Calif.) contributed a goal and two steals, and junior Lexi Atwell (La Jolla, Calif.) added a goal and a steal.
In the cage, junior goalie Lauren Burns (Long Grove, Ill.) and freshman net-minder Marley Presiado (Newport Beach, Calif.) made four and two saves respectively with Presiado chipping in an assist.
Brown opened the game with a 2-0 lead behind goals from McDougal and Klein. Following a St. Francis goal, Keck scored to make the score 3-1 before Klein's second goal of the first quarter gave the Bears a 4-2 lead at the end of one.
The Bears netted the first three goals of the second stanza as Schaum, Cook, and Perez scored consecutive goals to push the hosts ahead 7-2 with 1:23 left in the half. Brown remained ahead 7-3 at the break.
Perez and Atwell scored the first two goals of the second half as Brown maintained a 9-3 advantage with 2:02 to go in the third quarter. Following two markers from the Red Flash, a goal from Cook with one second left in the period pushed Brown ahead 10-5 heading to the fourth quarter.
Goals from Czajka and Perez kept Brown up 12-6 with 3:21 to play. After two St. Francis goals, Keck closed the game's scoring with 12 seconds remaining.
Brown beat St. Francis for the second time this season as the Bears topped the Red Flash, 12-3, on Apr. 14 in Lewisburg, Pa.
