Gardner, Costa Lead Gymnastics on Day One at USAG National Championships

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Sophomore Alyssa Gardner won the vault title in session two, and freshman Mei Li Costa tied the program record on bars to lead Brown University gymnastics at the 2019 USA Gymnastics Collegiate national Championships on Friday at the University of Bridgeport's Wheeler Recreation Center.

"We had some great individual performances today," Brown head coach Sara Carver-Milne said. "Alyssa won the vault title in session two, Mei Li tied the program record on bars for the second time this year, Julia scored a career high on beam, Kate had a tremendous performance on bars, and all four qualified for event finals."

Competing on the first day of USAGs with seven individuals in session one and three individuals in session two, the Bears qualified four individuals for event finals on Sunday, Apr. 14 at 1:00 p.m.

Gardner (Angola, N.Y.) took first place on vault in session two behind a career-high score of 9.825 while Costa (Lawrenceville, N.J.) matched the program record on bars for the second time this year with a 9.900 for second place. Senior Julia Green (Exton, Pa.) tallied a career-high 9.800 on beam for fourth place, and sophomore Kate Nelson (Montara, Calif.) notched a 9.775 on bars for fourth place.

The top five finishers on each event in the preliminary sessions advance to the individual finals with exceptions made based on team quotas. These gymnasts earn First Team USAG All-America honors while alternates garner Second Team USAG All-America laurels.

Senior Julia Green and sophomore Kate Nelson earned fourth-place finishes on beam and bars respectively to qualify for event finals and lead Brown in session one of the USAG National Championships on Friday afternoon.

Green (Exton, Pa.) scored a season-high 9.800 for fourth place on beam while Nelson (Montara, Calif.) tallied a 9.775 on bars for fourth place.

On vault, Green posted a 9.750 for eighth place, and senior Gabrielle Hechtman (Bellmore, N.Y.) registered a 9.600.

On bars in support of Nelson, sophomore Caroline Warren (Pawleys Island, S.C.) tallied a 9.675, and freshman Sophia Petrillo (Stoneham, Mass.) added a 9.500.

Alongside Green on beam, sophomore Rose Domonoske (Park City, Utah) notched a 9.775 for ninth place, and senior Cassidy Jung (San Marino, Calif.) scored a 9.700 for 18th place.

On floor, Petrillo and Green scored a 9.325 and 9.150 respectively.
