Nelson Wins Bars Title, Gymnastics Places Fifth at ECAC Championship

ITHACA, N.Y. – Sophomore Kate Nelson won the bars title as Brown University gymnastics placed fifth at the 2019 ECAC Division I Women's Gymnastics Championship with a 192.225 on Saturday afternoon at Cornell University's Newman Arena.

Nelson (Montara, Calif.) captured her first career ECAC title and also gained First Team All-ECAC on bars in the process. Senior Gabrielle Hechtman (Bellmore, N.Y.) earned All-ECAC on vault for the second time in her career, collecting First Team All-ECAC accolades with a third-place finish while freshman Mei Li Costa (Lawrenceville, N.J.) garnered First Team All-ECAC on bars with a third-place finish. Sophomore Emma Hansen (Cincinnati, Ohio) earned recognition as an ECAC Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

"We are very proud of Kate for winning the ECAC bars title and of Emma for earning ECAC Scholar-Athlete of the Year," Brown head coach Sara Carver-Milne said. "It was also great to see Gabby finish third on vault after persevering through injuries over the last two years and to have Mei Li come in third on bars."

In the team standings, Temple won the meet with a 194.750 while Yale (194.400) and Penn (193.925) finished second and third respectively. Cornell (193.300), Brown (192.225), and William & Mary (192.025) took fourth, fifth, and sixth in order.

As a team, Brown scored a 48.225 on vault, 48.500 on bars, 47.400 on beam, and a 48.100 on floor.

On vault, Hechtman led the Bears with a 9.775, finishing in third place and matching her career high. Nelson and Costa followed with a 9.725 and 9.625 respectively. Sophomore Alyssa Gardner (Angola, N.Y.) scored a 9.600, and senior Julia Green (Exton, Pa.) posted a 9.500.

Brown claimed two of the top three spots on bars as Nelson won the title with a 9.825, and Costa came in third with a 9.800. Hansen notched a 9.700, sophomore Caroline Warren (Pawleys Island, S.C.) registered a 9.600, and freshman Sophia Petrillo (Stoneham, Mass.) added a 9.575.

On beam, sophomore Rose Domonoske (Park City, Utah) paced the Bears with a 9.750 while Hansen and Petrillo both scored a 9.650.

Petrillo registered a team-high 9.700 on floor while freshman Abby Walsh (White Lake, Mich.) posted a 9.650. Hansen and Gardner each scored a 9.625, tying a season high for Hansen. Green tacked on a 9.500.

Next, Brown will look to qualify individuals to the NCAA Regionals from Apr. 4-6 and look to advance to the USA Gymnastics Collegiate National Championships from Apr. 12-14 at the University of Bridgeport in Bridgeport, Conn.
