BOSTON – The Brown women's track & field team kicked off the weekend with the opening day of the Boston University Valentine Invitational Friday at the BU Track & Tennis Center.
The 4x400 meter relay team of Maddie Frey (Waukesha, Wis.), Gracie Whelan (Charlotte, N.C.), Shari Rauls (Larchmont, N.Y.) and May Stern (Providence, R.I.) posted the third-best time in school history at 3:44.77, placing seventh out of 53 teams. Stern ran the fastest split at the meet in a time 53.47.
"One of our objectives going into the day was to put our 4x400 relay in a position to contend at the Ivy League championships in two weeks," said head coach Tim Springfield. "I think we did that today. May ran a tremendous anchor leg and really set herself up for the upcoming Ivy championships."
Samantha Valentine (Middleton, Wis.) turned in a strong performance in the 1,000 meters, as she finished 17th overall at 2:52.11 for the seventh-best time in program history.
Stern also finished third overall in the 500 meters, crossing the finish line in a time of 1:14.09, while Bailey Pate (Valencia, Calif.) and Rauls took 13th and 14th in the event, respectively, at 1:14.97 and 1:15.41.
Brown will compete at the Yale Giegengack Invitational on Saturday while the men's side will wrap up the Valentine Invitational.
