CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Brown University women's track & field team is currently in fourth place with 26 points after the first day of the Ivy League Indoor Track & Field Championships at Harvard's Gordon Track.
"We had an extremely good first day," said head coach Tim Springfield. "Scoring over 25 points on Day 1 with both teams is a great start, and we got our key performers through to finals tomorrow. Obviously, the long jump was huge for us and that group set the tone for the day."
Sophomore Ijeoma Uche (Lawrenceville, Ga.) captured the long jump title with a winning leap of 19-11.75, good for ninth-best in meet history, while teammate Rachel McMahon (New York, N.Y.) was runner-up in the event with a personal-best mark of 19-04.75.
Carly Paul (Fort Collins, Colo.) was second in the pentathlon with 3833 points, just shy of Beatrice Juskeviciute (3889), as she claimed both the high jump (5-07.75) and the long jump (18-03.00).
Zion Lewis (Canton, Ga.) qualified for the finals of the 60 meters at 7.66 in the prelims.
May Stern (Providence, R.I.) placed first in the 400-meter prelims at 55.59 and Gracie Whelan (Charlotte, N.C.) also qualified for the finals in a time of 57.47, while Bailey Pate (Valencia, Calif.) finished fourth in the preliminaries of the 500 meters (1:14.29) to advance to the finals.
Emily Kompelien (Edina, Minn.) was seventh in the mile at 4:50.44 to move on to Sunday's finals and Elise Claffey (Malvern, Pa.) also reached the finals in the 1,000 meters with a time of 2:52.59.
The Bears wrap up the Ivy Heptagonal Championships on Sunday in Cambridge.
