Hanover, N.H. – Senior leadership made the difference in Brown's 60-58 win over Dartmouth with senior Obi Okolie (Ajax, Ontario) scoring 15 points and senior Chris Sullivan (Wilmette, IL) adding a career high 13 points to lead the Bears over the Big Green, giving Brown (13-6, 1-2 Ivy) its first Ivy win of the season.
"I'm really pleased with the way the game turned out despite not playing our best offensively," said Brown head coach Mike Martin. "Our defense really kept us in the game and was responsible for the win."
A wild finish punctuated a game with seven lead changes, with the Bears rallying from a seven point deficit, 53-46, with 4:10 remaining. An 11-1 Brown run lifted the Bears to a 57-54 lead with Okolie leading the way with four points.
After Dartmouth cut the Bears' lead to one point on two free throws by Taurus Samuels with 22 seconds left, Okolie put Brown back up by three points with two free throws, 59-56, with 18 seconds remaining.
Big Green forward Chris Knight scored on a layup with nine seconds remaining to trail, 59-57, and Brown freshman David Mitchell added a free throw with eight seconds left for a 60-58 Bears' lead.
Big Green guard Guilien Smith had a chance to win the game with one second remaining, but his trey was off the mark.
Okolie connected on 4-of-7 field goals and 5-of-6 free throws while grabbing four rebounds. Sullivan came off the bench to convert 5-of-6 shots from the field, including 3-of-3 from beyond the three-point arc.
Brown sophomore Tamenang Choh (Lowell, MA) fouled out with 22 seconds remaining, registering 12 points and a game high nine rebounds, while sophomore George Mawanda-Kalema (Burke, VA) chipped in with seven points, all in the first half.
Brown won the game despite shooting just 37-percent from the field (21-of-56), while Dartmouth shot 47-percent overall (21-of-45).
The cold shooting Bears hit just 1-of-11 treys in the opening eight minutes, falling behind 17-11. Seven straight points by Mawanda-Kalema gave the Bears their first lead, 18-17, with 6:14 left in the half.
The Bears finished strong and held their biggest lead at the half, 27-23, on a Chris Sullivan trey.
Sullivan's trey at the 9:14 mark of the second half gave the Bears a 43-42 lead, but the Big Green scored seven straight points to pull ahead, 49-43, with 6:37 remaining on a corner trey by James Foye.
Zach Hunsaker's trey with 1:54 remaining cut Dartmouth's lead to 54-52 and Desmond Cambridge drew the Bears to within one point, 54-53, on a free throw with 1:31 left to play.
Choh's layup on a pass from Cambridge with 1:00 remaining gave Brown a 55-54 advantage, and Choh and Okolie hit free throws for a 57-54 Brown lead.
Brown is back in Ivy League action again tomorrow evening in Boston, facing Harvard on Saturday, February 2 at Levities Pavilion. Tip-off is 7:00 pm on ESPN+ and WPRV AM-790.
