PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown University gymnastics and wrestling programs will combine for their fifth annual "Rumble and Tumble" meet at the Pizzitola Sports Center on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. in an event that has become a marquee date on both teams' schedules.
"Now it is a marquee event for our fans," Brown wrestling head coach Todd Beckerman said. "This year it is really exciting because it is Saturday night, it's seven o'clock, and all the students are back in town on campus. It is an event that our team feeds off of. It's an event that is exciting for the fans, and it makes an atmosphere that gets us fired up."
After partnering for the event for the first time in 2015, the Bears' gymnastics and wrestling programs will compete alongside one another for the fifth straight season. At this year's event, gymnastics will host a quad meet alongside Bridgeport, Hamline, and Rhode Island College while wrestling will meet Binghamton in an EIWA dual meet.
"It's an exciting event," Brown gymnastics head coach Sara Carver-Milne said. "It's very unique. It's standing room only. The fans really get into it. The athletes really get into it. It's a great environment for everyone, and it's something unique that we are able to do here because we have gymnastics and wrestling teams."
Brown's senior gymnasts and wrestlers have competed in the event in all four of their years on College Hill and have come to embrace the energy of the day.
"I remember thinking that it was going to be kind of distracting because wrestling would be right next to us, but it's not," senior gymnast Morgan Hagenbuch said.
"We are totally in the zone, and you feed off the cheers. You can hear when things are going well, and it gives you energy. It's not distracting at all. You don't really even notice it other than the excitement that is going on."
The frenzy of action that ensues provides a special environment for the fans and student-athletes alike.
"Every year there is a lot of energy," senior wrestler CJ LaFragola said. "It's the one time per year that we really sell out. It's a full house, and the fans really bring in a lot of energy. Last year, they really helped carry us over Princeton who right now is a top-ranked team. We were able to pull through, feeding off the energy of the crowd. Having the simultaneous action, there is always something going on. It's great for the fans, great for the participants, and it's just an awesome event all around."
The juxtaposition of the two sports with the wrestling mat fitting in alongside the gymnastics' floor and uneven bars events brings a distinctive excitement to the day.
"It's very exciting to compete in this event," junior wrestler Zach Krause said. "Last year, I was fortunate enough to compete in the event, and it was one of the most exciting environments that I have ever had the opportunity to compete in. The combination of our matches, the different rotations in gymnastics, and the energy in the crowd culminates to create a really special environment."
With a new cohort of freshmen joining the Bears each fall, the event also acts as an opportunity for a new group of student-athletes and spectators to experience the environment.
"I know it's a really exciting event," freshman gymnast Sophia Petrillo said. "Everyone always talks about it leading up to it. Everyone says that it is super fun and a really great crowd out there with everyone cheering. I'm definitely excited to be there."
For two sports that look quite different at first glance, the event has helped both sides see similarities in the two teams and built up an even stronger camaraderie between the two programs.
"I love this meet," Hagenbuch said. "We are pretty close to the wrestling team, and they have always been great about supporting us and we do the same for them. This is by far my favorite competition we have every year. We all look forward to it. It's on a night this year. It's easily my favorite meet of the year."
"It's great because we are pretty close with the gymnastics team," LaFragola said. "We appreciate their sport as much as they appreciate our sport. They are two unique sports. Even though we don't necessarily have a 'sister' team, we have a similar background where there are individual and team aspects. There are a lot of similarities although they are very different sports. It's a cool combination to put together into one event."
For the fifth straight year, the two sides will bring the Pizzitola Sports Center to life when they run onto Williams Court on Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
