SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Each team looked like it was in control at different points of the contest but it was the Brown women's lacrosse team that would claim the Ninth Annual Ocean State Cup, 15-14, on Wednesday night at the Conaty Indoor Athletic Center.
After trailing 4-0 to open the contest, Brown (3-2) inched its way back and later went on an eight goal run to take a 10-5 lead at halftime. Bryant (2-1) put together five-straight goals halfway through the second and was later able to tie the game at 14 but freshman Risa Mosenthal (Campton, N.H.) generated the game winner, her team leading 20th score, and the Bears held off the Bulldogs.
Junior Caroline Zaffino (Darien, Conn.) led Brown in scoring for the night with a career-high seven goals and one assist. Five of her goals came in the first period comeback. Mosenthal concluded the game with four goals, her fifth-straight game with a hat trick or better.
Bryant opened the matchup with four-consecutive goals, with two coming from Catlin Brown just five minutes into the game. Zaffino then provided the Bears with some momentum and scored two in a row at 24:25 and 23:04.
C. Brown added her third at 22:13 and then the Bears would take over, scoring eight straight to end the half. Zaffino started the run at 18:47, following up on a rebound off of a free position. The midfielder added two more in the run while sophomore Emma DeGennaro (Huntington, N.Y.) closed out the scoring at 3:12 to give Brown a 10-5 advantage after 30 minutes.
Draw controls (8) and saves (7) were even for both teams in the first, while the Bears outshot the Bulldogs, 21-17.
Bryant was the first to score in the second, as Meaghan Brennan registered a tally at 28:39. Mosenthal added her second of the night at 27:54 and the Bulldogs countered at 24:27 (Meredith James). The Bears next scored two straight for a 12-7 lead, the first coming from Mosenthal and the second from Zaffino.
Jess Demeo then started a five goal push for Bryant at 17:43. The Bulldogs benefited from two man-up goals in the run, both coming from Demeo (16:12, 10:52). Zaffino stopped the run at 10:11 to maintain a 14-12 lead but Bryant would tie it at 14 with scores from C. Brown (9:11) and Lauren Britton (6:19).
Mosenthal would give Brown a one-goal advantage at 5:46 and the Bears' defense would force timely turnovers preventing a Bulldog threat up until the conclusion.
Bryant had the shot advantage in the second half at 17-14 but Brown had the edge for the game, 35-34. The Bears had a 10-5 lead in draw controls for the second to give them an overall 18-13 benefit. Each team had two free-position goals on the night, one in each half, with Brown going 2-for-8 and Bryant 2-for-6.
Sophomore Maggie Bigelow (Montclair, N.J.) finished with 10 saves in net, a season high, while her counterpart Samantha Santeramo made 15 stops.
In addition to Zaffino and Mosenthal, junior Hafsa Moinuddin (Cheshire, Conn.) added a goal and two assists, bring her team lead in assists up to nine on the season. Freshman Maggie Fowler (Bethesda, Md.), senior Emma Dahle (Wynnewood, Pa.) and DeGennaro also added goals for the Bears.
C. Brown led Bryant with four goals and an assist while Jess DeMeo and Lauren Britton each concluded the night with hat tricks.
Defensively, junior Olivia Lee (Bethesda, Md.) caused a game-high three turnovers and also scooped up two ground balls. Zaffino and senior Marissa Hudgins (Syracuse, N.Y.) each added five draw controls.
The Bears next return to Stevenson-Pincince Field and will entertain Monmouth in a non-conference game on Saturday, March 10 starting at 4:00 p.m.
