
Women's Lacrosse Falls at No. 8/7 Penn

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – After the Brown women's lacrosse team built a 7-5 lead in the opening half, No. 8/7 Penn would outscore the the Bears 11-3 in the decisive second frame to take a 16-10 win at Penn Park on Saturday. With the loss, Brown moves to 5-4 on the season and 0-3 in Ivy League competition while Penn improves to 8-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play.
It took seven minutes for either team to score as junior Caroline Zaffino (Darien, Conn.) gave the Bears a 1-0 lead with her 21st score of the season at 23:16. Freshman Risa Mosenthal (Campton, N.H.) gave Brown a three-goal advantage with tallies at 22:29 and 18:18 before Penn would get on the board at 18:00 with a goal from Alex Condon.
Gabby Rosenzweig added the Quakers' second score at 15:52 to pull Penn within one (3-2) at 15:52. Sophomore Emma DeGennaro (Huntington, N.Y.) responded with two-straight at 14:06 and 12:50 and then assisted freshman Maggie Fowler's (Bethesda, Md.) tally at 10:23 to build the Bears' lead to 6-2. Mosenthal added her third at 6:02 for her eighth-straight game with a hat trick and a five-goal Brown cushion.
The Bears won six draw controls compared to Penn's three to jump out to its lead, but Penn would close its deficit and put in three-straight goals, including two from Rosenzweig to pull within a pair (7-5) at the end of the stanza.
Penn outshot Brown 17-10 in first and closed on the draw control advantage, trailing the Bears by just one (7-6). Sophomore Maggie Bigelow (Montclair, N.J.) was a huge part of why Brown held the lead with six saves in the first while Mikaila Cheeseman generated two stops on the other end.
The Quakers knotted the contest with two scores to begin the second, with Caroline Cummings netting the equalizer at 26:22. Brown would regain an 8-7 advantage at 21:22 when junior Hafsa Moinuddin (Cheshire, Conn.) scored her first of the day but Penn's Alex Condon would soon tie the game again at 20:01. The Quakers took their first lead of the contest at 17:48 when Erin Barry scored her third goal of the afternoon.
Senior Carolyn Paletta (Greenwich, Conn.) tied it for the third time (9-9) at 16:36 but Barry would again put Penn up by one at 15:54. From there Penn would pull away with two-straight goals for a 12-9 lead. Paletta scored her second at 9:51 (free position) to bring the game to 12-10 but Penn would add four more goals before the final whistle for a 16-10 victory.
Penn led in shots (16-9) and draw controls (10-5) for the second half and outshot the Bears 33-19 overall.
Bigelow finished with 10 saves for the Bears, her third game this season with double-digit stops, while Cheeseman make seven, which included five in the second period.
Mosenthal concluded the day with three goals and two assists while DeGennaro generated two goals and three assists. Barry led Penn with five goals and one assist while Rosenzweig contributed four goals and five helpers.
The Bears next return to non-conference play and will host Louisville on Wednesday, March 28 at 1:00 p.m. The game will be broadcast on NESN and the Ivy League Network.
