WORCESTER, Mass. – Rookies Derek Waleffe (Madison, Wis.) and Malcolm Johnson (Wilmington, Del.) both scored to lead the Brown men's soccer team over Holy Cross, 2-1, in Tuesday night's non-conference match at Linda Johnson Smith Soccer Stadium.
Brown (5-5) outshot Holy Cross (2-6-4) by a 19-7 margin to snap a two-game skid. Junior Matthew Chow (Vancouver, British Columbia) assisted on both goals.
Freshman James Swomley (Newton, Mass.) made two saves to earn his third win of the season. Henry Stutz recorded seven saves for the Crusaders.
Simon Becher put Holy Cross on the board in the 19th minute when he turned on a pass from Mason Brummett and hit the back of the net for the early lead.
Brown responded at 24:46 when Waleffe notched his third tally of the season. Chow generated a burst to the net and took a shot that was denied by Stutz, but the ball came right out to Waleffe in front of the net, and the rookie followed with a one-timer for the rebound goal.
The Bears outshot the Crusaders, 14-1, in the opening 45 minutes.
Johnson gave the Bears a one-goal lead as he scored just 1:34 into the second half. He fielded a pass from Chow, dribbled into the box and rifled a shot past Stutz for his first career goal.
Holy Cross had back-to-back shots on target midway through the frame, but Swomley saved both bids to preserve the lead. Brown held the Crusaders to without a shot on net the rest of the way to secure the victory.
Brown had five players post multiple shots, led by Waleffe and Chow with four shots apiece.
Brown will host Harvard on Saturday night at 7 PM.
