PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's rugby team was defeated by Norwich, 29-24, in its final regular season match on Sunday afternoon at Marvel Field. After getting shutout in the first half, the Bears went on to score four tries, including two from senior Louise Leitao (Porto Alegre, Brazil) in the second frame.
"The game was a tale of two halves," said head coach Kathy Flores. "First half belonged to Norwich and the second half became ours. I'm proud of how we stayed in the game and fought back though it was just a bit too late."
Norwich (5-2) opened the match with three consecutive tries and one successful conversion in the first half to take a 17-0 lead into the break.
Leitao provided momentum for the Bears (2-4) to open the second when she converted their first try. The Cadets responded with a score and conversion to bring the match to 24-5.
Leitao added her second try of the afternoon and sophomore Olivia Duba (San Ramon, Calif.) added the kick to pull Brown within 10 (22-12).
The Cadets would again halt the Bears' scoring with a try of their own to increase their lead to 29-12.
Brown made a strong push towards the end of the half with tries from freshman Gemma Ryu (Denver, Colo.) and sophomore Karina Wang (Ottawa, Ontario), with Duba providing the kick on the latter score, to bring the contest to 29-27. Time would expire before the Bears could do further damage.
