
Women's Crew's Madden Places Fourth in Double Scull at U23 Worlds

PLOVDIV, Bulgaria – Brown University women's crew rising senior Cicely Madden placed fourth in the U23 Women's Double Sculls (BW2x) at the 2017 Under 23 World Rowing Championships from July 19-23.
Madden advanced to Sunday's A final after finishing second in both the heats and semifinals earlier in the week. Along with teammate Elizabeth Sharis, a rising junior at Stanford, Madden won the double scull at the U.S. trials in June to capture a spot at the World Championships.
In Sunday's A final, Madden and Sharis came in fourth behind a time of 7:06.420, trailing third-place Greece (7:04.970) by 1.450 seconds as well as second-place Italy (7:04.030) and first-place Bulgaria (7:03.880). The U.S. boat topped both Hungary (7:16.710) and New Zealand (7:18.690).
In the semifinals on Saturday, Madden came in second with a time of 6:59.650 to secure a spot in the A final. Madden and the double scull placed second in their heat on Thursday with a time of 6:57.950, advancing directly to Saturday's semifinals.
Madden clinched her spot at the world championships after winning the women's double scull event at the 2017 USRowing U23 World Championship Trials at Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J., from June 26-29. She won the event behind a time of 7:05.14 on June 29. Madden also captured first in her Tuesday heat and in the Monday time trial.
During her time at Brown, Madden has earned All-Ivy honors three times and gained CRCA First Team All-America as well as CRCA First Team All-Region 1 accolades this past spring. A three-year member of the Bears' first varsity eight, she has helped the 1V8 post an 89-28 overall record over the past three seasons.
Under the guidance of coaches John and Phoebe Murphy, Madden has aided Brown to the Ivy League team points trophy in each of the last three years and has helped the program finish third, sixth, and eighth at the NCAA Championships in 2015, 2016, and 2017 respectively.
