
Men's Swimming & Diving Announces Award Winners at Team Banquet

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown men's swimming & diving team handed out its team awards at their annual banquet on Tuesday night at the Faculty Club. Three program records were set for the Bears in the 2016-17 season while 18 new marks made the school's all-time top 25 list, with 14 of them in the top 10.
Senior Daniel Klotz (Berlin, Conn.) led off the award winners, earning The Joseph Watmough MVP Award. Klotz recorded strong finishes at the Ivy League Championships with a fourth place showing in the 50 freestyle while also placing eighth in the 100 butterfly and 10th in the 100 freestyle. He was also a member of the 400 IM relay team that broke the school record at the Championships.
Senior Nicholas Johnston (Pleasanton, Calif.) was the recipient of the squad's Win Wilson '51 Service Award, for exemplifying unselfishness through commitment and hard work in the pool, in the community, and for the team. At the Ivy League Championships, Johnston finished 10th in the 100 backstroke and also swam the 200 backstroke and 200 IM.
Rookie Alex Smilenov (Katy, Texas) took home the team's Ken Miller '70 Scholar-Athlete Award, an honor given to a team member who, through dedication in the classroom and in the pool, best exemplifies what it means to be a scholar-athlete. In the pool, Smilenov finished 10th in the 200 freestyle and 13th in the 100 freestyle at the Ivy League Championships while also competing in the 500 freestyle.
The Thomas R. Temple '65 Coaches Award went to senior Kevin Mertz (Santa Rosa, Calif.), an honor recognizing the qualities of dedication, personal self-improvement, and sportsmanship.
Freshman Cody Cline (Wellington, Fla.) took home Rookie of the Year honors. The first year took ninth in the 50 freestyle and 12th in the 200 freestyle at the Ivy League Championships while also competing in the 100 freestyle.
