
Women's Lacrosse Heads to Iona on Saturday for Non-Conference Showdown

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's lacrosse team will hit the road and travel to New Rochelle, N.Y. to compete in a non-conference contest against Iona on Saturday, March 11, starting at 1:00 p.m.

LAST TIME OUT
Brown was edged by Bryant, 9-8, in the Eighth Annual Ocean State Cup at Stevenson-Pincince Field on Wednesday night. After trailing the majority of the game, Bryant came back to tie the game at 7-7, later 8-8, and scored the go-ahead goal with 2:45 left on the clock. Brown held possession with 24 second remaining in the contest but Bryant forced a turnover to secure its win. Sophomore Hafsa Moinuddin paced the Bears' offense with three points on two goals and one assist while junior Bri Irons also added two goals.
LAST TIME VS. IONA
The two teams squared off last season with the Bears posting a 13-11 win at Stevenson-Pincince Field on Feb. 20. Brown outscored Iona by one goal each half and overcame a 3-0 deficit to start the game. Senior Kerianne Hunt led the team in scoring with three goals and one assist while Lauren Toy '16 added four goals. Brown is 3-0 all-time again Iona, with the first meeting in 2014, a 17-4 victory for the Bears.
SCOUTING THE GAELS
Iona opened the season with a 12-10 win at Wagner on Feb. 18 and have recorded a 3-4 overall record with additional wins against Central Connecticut (15-6, Feb. 22) and Sacred Heart (14-13 OT, March 8). Pamela Giordano leads the team in scoring with 18 points on 16 goals and two assists. Grace Celona has the Gaels' assist lead with 10 on the year to go along with four goals for 14 points. Christine Gironda also has 14 points for Iona, with 11 goals and three helpers. Shannon McCaffre has played in six games in net, and has recorded a 12.15 goals-against average and a .451 save percentage for a 2-3 record while Samantha Tyo has three games played, a 9.53 GAA and a .452 save percentage for a 1-1 record. The Gaels have outscored their opponents in the first half, 31-28, but are getting outscored in the second, 51-29.
BROWN LEADERS
The Bears offense is powered by sophomore Hafsa Moinuddin, who has 17 points on 14 goals and three assists. Sophomore Carolyn Paletta is second on the team in scoring with 10 goals and one assist for 11 points. Sophomore Zoe Verni (6G, 1A) is third in scoring. Junior Mikaela Karlsson has started all five games in net and carries a 7.38 goals-against average and a .576 save percentage. Offensively, Brown is outscoring its opponents 52-36 overall on the season.
BEARS DEFENSE RANKS FOURTH IN THE NATION
Entering the week, Brown's defense ranked fourth in the nation in scoring defense, allowing just 6.75 goals per game. To open the season, the Bears posted a 19-0 shutout over Sacred Heart on Feb. 18. Junior goalie Mikaela Karlsson is third in the nation in both GAA (6.96) and save percentage (.597).
