
Women's Hockey Earns Season Sweep Over Dartmouth With 5-2 Win

HANOVER, N.H. - The Brown women's hockey team earned a 5-2 win over Dartmouth at Thompson Arena on Friday night to complete the season sweep over the Big Green. Freshman Veronica Alois (Andover, Mass.) recorded a hat trick for the Bears, with two goals in the second period and one in the third. The season sweep marks the first over Dartmouth since the 1999-00 regular season and Brown's first win in Hanover since March 17, 2002.
Sophomore Bridget Carey (Weymouth, Mass.) registered the Bears' first goal at 8:09 of the first period when junior Sam Donovan (New Brighton, Minn.) dished her the puck in the slot and she buried it for her sixth goal of the year. Sophomore Abby Niewchas (Cochrane, Alberta) also tallied a helper on the play. Freshman Sarah Migliori (East Greenwich, R.I.) gave Brown a two-goal lead at 16:54 with Donovan recording her second assist of the contest while freshman Lucinda Quigley (Newton, Mass.) also contributed an assist. Donovan skated through the slot and fed Migliori in front, who also netted her sixth of the season.
The Bears (6-22-0, 4-17-0 ECAC) concluded the opening stanza 2-for-2 on the penalty kill. Senior Monica Elvin (Oakland, Calif.) had a strong first in net, stopping 17 shots.
Brown went up 3-0 in the second when freshman Sena Hanson (New Brighton, Minn.) won the puck at the blue line and passed it ahead to Alois who scored her third goal of the year from the far faceoff circle at 8:03. Alois added her second goal of the frame at 15:31 when junior Samantha Swanstrom (Ham Lake, Minn.) found her in front with a quick pass to give the Bears a 4-0 advantage. Hanson added her second assist on the night on the secondary helper.
Bailee Brekke put Dartmouth (6-21-0, 4-17-0 ECAC) on the board at 18:05 to bring the game to 4-1.
Brown had the second period's only power-play, with Dartmouth fighting off the infraction. Elvin increased her save total to 29, with 12 saves in the stanza. Christie Honor relieved Robyn Chemago of her goaltending duties and made nine saves in relief. After being outshot 17-7 in the first period, the Bears and Big Green were even with 13 shots apiece in the second.
Dartmouth scored its second-straight goal to open the third when Kennedy Ottenbreit recorded the tally at 4:46. The Brown defense fought off any further threat presented by the Big Green. Alois netted her third goal, an empty net score, at 17:20 to complete her first-career hat trick and bring the game to its final of 5-2. Hanson gained her third assist on the play, which was also a career-high output.
Dartmouth held the shot lead in the third at 8-5. Neither team committed a penalty in the stanza.
Overall, Dartmouth held the advantage in shots, 38-25. The Bears finished 0-for-1 on the power play and were 2-for-2 on the penalty kill.
Elvin ended the game with 36 saves, her 15th 30+ save performance of the season. She also surpassed 2,000 saves for her career in the contest, needing just seven going into the night. Honor concluded the game with 13 stops for Dartmouth.
With two assists, Donovan has scored in three-straight games.
The Bears will next play in their final game of the 2016-17 season tomorrow (Saturday, Feb. 18) when they travel to Cambridge, Mass. to take on Harvard at 3:00 p.m. In addition to being broadcasted on the ILDN, the contest will also appear on NESN.
