PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Brown women's hockey team was defeated by No. 7/7 Cornell, 5-1, to close out its home portion of the 2016-17 season on Saturday at Meehan Auditorium. Seniors Erin Conway (Jackson, Mich.), Monica Elvin (Oakland, Calif.), Catherine LeBoeuf (Dieppe, New Brunswick) and Maddie Woo (Plymouth, Minn.) were honored in a pregame ceremony for their contributions over the last four years.
To open the contest, Cornell (17-6-4, 13-3-4 ECAC) went on a power play at 3:27 of the first period where Kristin O'Neill tallied a power-play score at 3:35 to give the Big Red a 1-0 advantage. Later in the period, Brown went on its own power play at 18:35. As time was winding down in the stanza, junior Samantha Swanstrom (Ham Lake, Minn.) had a scoring opportunity in front but the horn sounded after Cornell's Marlen Boissonnault made a save. Elvin made nine saves in the frame while Boissonnault turned away three shots.
The Bears (5-22-0, 3-17-0 ECAC) opened the second on the power play from the first but the Big Red fought off the infraction. Brown was called for a penalty at 4:32 and killed off Cornell's opportunity. Almost halfway through the second, Hanna Bunton gave the Big Red a two-goal lead at 8:26. Later at 15:31, Kaitlin Doering put back a Cornell rebound to give the visitors a 3-0 lead. Elvin ended the period with 12 stops while Boissonnault tallied six saves.
Diana Buckley (14:30) and Paige Lewis (14:39) added two quick goals in the third period for the Big Red to increase their lead to five.
Sophomore Leah Olson (East Harwich, Mass.) put the Bears on the board at 16:17 of the third with her fourth goal of the year. Junior Sam Donovan (New Brighton, Minn.) won the face-off in the neutral zone and slid the puck back to Olson who flicked it forward, which was too tough for Boissonnault to handle.
Elvin concluded the game with 32 saves for her 13th contest this season tallying 30 or more saves. Boissonnault finished with 16 saves for the Big Red.
Brown was 0-for-3 on the power play while Cornell was 1-for-3, capitalizing in the first period.
The Bears will next close out the regular season on the road at Dartmouth on Friday, Feb. 17 and at Harvard on Saturday, Feb. 18. Friday's contest will begin at 6:00 p.m. while Saturday's puck drop will be at 3:00 p.m.
