
Women's Hockey To Play in 23rd Mayor's Cup Versus No. 8/9 Providence on Tuesday

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's hockey team will continue non-conference play and travel to nearby Schneider Arena to play in the 23rd installment of the Mayor's Cup against No. 8/9 Providence College on Tuesday, Jan. 2 at 2:00 p.m. The Friars have won the last three match-ups. The series between the inter-city rivals began in 1996 with Brown coming away victorious, 4-3, on January 24 in the inaugural game. Brown still holds the overall edge in the Mayor's Cup series, 10-9-3.

HISTORY OF THE MAYOR'S CUP
The Mayor's Cup series between the intra-city rivals, Brown and Providence College, began on January 14, 1996, with Brown coming away with a 4-3 victory at College Hill in the inaugural game. The Bears hold the overall edge in the Mayor's Cup series at 10-9-3 while the Friars have won the last three meetings, including a 7-3 showing last season (Nov. 26) at Brown, and lead the overall series between the two teams, 37-24-3.
BROWN VS. PROVIDENCE
After Brown won the first ever match-up against Providence, 8-0 on Nov. 16, 1976, the Friars rattled off 22 straight wins, spanning from Feb. 4, 1977 to Feb. 24, 1992. Since 1992, the series has been fairly even, with Brown holding a 23-15-3 advantage, with the longest winning streak at six games (Brown: Feb. 5, 2000-Feb. 13, 2002).
SCOUTING THE FRIARS
Providence enters the contest with a 11-5-4 overall record and an 8-1-2 mark in the Hockey East. The Friars entered both national polls on Oct. 30 and 31 and have been ranked for seven consecutive weeks, coming in at 8/9 in the Dec. 11/12 USCHO.com and USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine polls.
The Friars last played on December 9, a 6-5 win versus Boston University, and are unbeaten in their last three (2-2 tie at UConn on Dec. 1 and 4-1 win vs. UConn on Dec. 2). Providence is 7-2-0 on the year when playing home at Schneider Arena, with both of its losses coming against ECAC competition (Cornell: 2-1 loss on Nov. 25, 4-2 loss on Nov. 26).
Cassidy MacPherson leads the team in points with 18, on four goals and a squad-best 14 assists. Maureen Murphy carries the Friars' goal lead with 13 on the year to go along with three helpers to tie for third on the team in scoring with 16 points. Madison Myers has seen the bulk of the action in net, starting all but two games, and has a 2.08 goals-against average, a .922 save percentage and two shutouts for a 10-4-4 record.
The Friars lead the nation with seven shorthanded goals this season, with three coming from Murphy.
BROWN TALKING POINTS
The Bears are led in scoring by senior Sam Donovan, who has an even six goals and six assists for 12 points. Junior Cara Najjar has the squad's assist lead with eight on the year and also has one goal to rank third on the Bears in scoring (nine points). Sena Hanson is tied for second in scoring with 10 points, having a team-best seven goals and three assists.
Goaltending duties have been shared for the Bears this season with all three goalies - senior Julianne Landry, sophomore Calla Isaac and freshman Lauren Rippy - seeing action. Isaac leads the squad in appearances with eight on the year.
Brown has played a total of five ranked opponents on the season and has hosted three weekends against ranked foes, which include No. 8/8 Cornell and No. 3/3 Colgate on Nov. 17-18, No. 7/7 St. Lawrence and No. 3/3 Clarkson on Nov. 3-4 and No. 10 Robert Morris to open the season on Oct. 20-21.
LAST TIME OUT
The Bears split their first series back from break with Sacred Heart on Friday, Dec. 29 and Saturday, Dec. 30. Brown picked up a 3-1 win in game one and fell 5-4 in the series finale.
Sophomore Sena Hanson recorded the game winner and had two scores in the Bears' 3-1 victory while Same Donovan also added a goal. Junior Cara Najjar picked up her team leading eighth assist of the year on Donovan's insurance goal while senior Samantha Swanstrom tallied the helper on the game's first goal, her sixth of the year. Freshman Lauren Rippy made 29 saves in net for Brown for her first career win, which included 14 stops in the third period.
Game two saw four ties and the Bears coming up short to Sacred Heart. Bridget Carey scored the contest's first goal and later added an assist for her first multi-point game of the season. Senior Katie Swanstrom, Donovan and sophomore Maybelline Beiring added goals for Brown. Donovan goal was her ninth career goal against the Pioneers in her career and Beiring's score was her first collegiate tally.
LAST SEASON VS. PROVIDENCE
Providence won last year's Mayor's Cup on Nov. 26, 7-3, at Meehan Auditorium. The Friars opened the game with six-straight goals, four in the opening period and two in the second. Brown got on the board halfway through the third and registered a run of its own, scoring three straight in less than three minutes before the Friars halted the Bears with an empty net goal. Providence's Cassidy MacPherson and Blair Parent set marks for the Mayor's Cup game, with MacPherson generating a series best in points (4) and assists (4) while Parent scored a series best three goals. Sophomore Sarah Migliroi led Brown with a goal and an assist in the contest.

The Bears will play their fourth-straight non-conference game and travel to Storrs, Conn. to take on UConn on Saturday, Jan. 6 at 3:00 p.m.
