
Women's Hockey Downs Sacred Heart, 3-1

SHELTON, Conn. - The Brown women's hockey team opened the second half of the season with a 3-1 victory over Sacred Heart at the Sports Center of Connecticut on Friday night. Sophomore Sena Hanson (New Brighton, Minn.) tied a career-high with two goals in the contest to lead the Bears.
Brown outshot Sacred Heart 16-6 in the first period and gained a 1-0 lead at 6:28 when Hanson registered a score on a rebound with the assist coming from senior Samantha Swanstrom (Ham Lake, Minn.) on the original shot. Freshman Lauren Rippy (Plymouth, Mich.) received the start in net for the Bears and stopped all six shots she faced in the first while Sarah Erban made 15 saves on the other end.
Hanson tacked on her second of the night, her team leading seventh of the season, 4:16 into the second. Senior Sam Donovan (New Brighton, Minn.) then gave the Bears a 3-0 advantage with a score at 7:47. Junior Cara Najjar (Stoneham, Mass.) notched the helper on Donovan's goal, her team-best eighth of the year.
Sacred Heart got one back just before the end of the second with a shorthanded tally from Taylor Moreland at 18:56. Shots were closer in the second stanza with the Bears holding a 10-9 edge.
Both teams skated through a scoreless third, with the Pioneers claiming the shot lead in the final frame, 14-5.
Overall, Brown was a perfect 7-for-7 on the penalty kill and 0-for-2 on the power-play. The Bears held the game edge in shots at 31-29. Rippy and Erban each made 28 saves in goal for their respective teams.
The Bears close out the series at Sacred Heart tomorrow (Saturday, Dec. 30) with a 4:00 p.m. contest at Sports Center of Connecticut.
