
Women's Hockey Edged by Sacred Heart, 5-4

SHELTON, Conn. - The Brown women's hockey team was defeated by Sacred Heart, 5-4, on Saturday at the Sports Center of Connecticut. Junior Bridget Carey (Weymouth, Mass.) registered her first multi-point game of the season with a goal and an assist to lead the Bears.
Brown (2-13-0) again scored the first goal of contest at 5:46 of the first period with Carey recording her second of the season. Senior Cynthia Kyin (Skokie, Ill.) and freshman Abby Nearis (Beverly, Mass.) contributed the assists. Sacred Heart (13-4-0) tied the game 1-1 at 17:22 with a tally by Victoria Grimmer.
Senior Katie Swanstrom (Ham Lake, Minn.) put Brown back on top, 2-1, just before the end of the opening stanza (19:01) with her first of the year. Sophomore Steph Rempe (Calgary, Alberta) contributed the assist. Brown finished the frame with a commanding 11-2 advantage in shots.
The Pioneers tied the contest again in the second period with Grimmer scoring her second of the day at 10:39. Brown countered to regain a 3-2 lead with a score from senior Sam Donovan (New Brighton, Minn.) at 13:48 with the assist from sophomore Sena Hanson (New Brighton, Minn.). The goal by Donovan was her ninth against the Pioneers for her career.
The Bears concluded the second with 11 shots for the second period in a row, and held the Pioneers to seven.
Sacred Heart opened the third with two-straight goals in under a minute to take a 4-3 lead. Maddie Bishop (4:50) had the first score while Taylor Moreland (5:48) tallied the second.
Sophomore Maybelline Beiring (Calumet, Mich.) tied the contest 4-4 for the Bears at 7:12 with her first-career goal while Carey picked up the helper. Meghan Kebalka later followed with the game winner for the Pioneers at 13:44.
The Bears had the shot lead for the third straight period with a 12-7 advantage in the final stanza and outshot the Pioneers 34-16 overall. Brown was 1-for-3 overall on the power play and went 3-for-3 on the penalty kill, moving its weekend total to a perfect 10-for-10.
Senior Julianne Landry (Hanover, Mass.) made 11 saves in net for the Bears while Sarah Erban stopped 30 shots for Sacred Heart.
Brown next continues non-conference play and travels to nearby Schneider Arena to play in the 23rd installment of the Mayor's Cup against No. 8/9 Providence College on Tuesday, Jan. 2 at 2:00 p.m.
