PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Brown women's hockey team was defeated by No. 8/8 Cornell, 5-1, on Friday night at Meehan Auditorium. Sophomore Sena Hanson (New Brighton, Minn.) scored for the Bears on the night, her team-leading third tally of the year.
The first period opened with the teams evenly matched, with Brown gaining an early 5-2 lead in shots. Midway through the stanza, Cornell had a strong shift and generated five shots, three of them on goal and saved by sophomore Calla Isaac (Sherwood Park, Alberta), but Diana Buckley would intercept a clearing pass and one time it back to give the Big Red a 1-0 lead at 12:10.
Cornell (4-3-0, 4-1-0 ECAC) increased its lead to two at 16:35 with a score from Grace Graham that took a lucky bounce off of Isaac's leg pad. The Big Red overcame the early shot differential and carried a 12-5 advantage after the first period.
Brown (1-8-0, 1-6-0 ECAC) had a power play to open the second and put two shots on goal but could not capitalize. Cornell then took a 3-0 lead 5:55 into the period with a tally from Sarah Knee. Maddie Mills made it a four goal game at 14:36.
The Bears got one back when Hanson scored her second goal in as many games at 15:31. Brown forced a turnover in its defensive end and fed it to Hanson who skated through the neutral zone and fired in a shot from the faceoff circle. Junior Cara Najjar (Stoneham, Mass.) and senior Sam Donovan (New Brighton, Minn.) recorded the assists.
Cornell went ahead 5-1 just before the end of the frame with a power-play goal from Willow Slobodzian at 19:23, snapping Brown's streak of 10 consecutive penalties killed. The Big Red carried a slight 11-8 advantage in shots for the second and were 1-for-1 on the power play while the Bears were 0-for-2.
The two teams skated through a scoreless third with Cornell having the shot lead at 10-6. Brown fought off its lone infraction in the stanza.
Isaac finished the contest with 28 saves while Marlene Boissonnault made 18.
The Bears are back on the ice at Meehan Auditorium tomorrow (Nov. 18) against No. 3/3 Colgate starting at 3:00 p.m.
