Smith scored the first three goals of the game for the natural hat trick and added an assist for four points. Chase Priskie and Tanner Macmaster scored the other two goals for the Bobcats. Max Willman (Barnstable, Mass.) paced the Bears with four shots.
Rookie Luke Kania (Chicago, Ill.) made a career high 31 saves in the loss. Andrew Shortridge had 22 stops for the shutout.
Quinnipiac took advantage of the first power play of the game as Smith tapped in a rebound at 12:03 for the 1-0. Smith added his second of the period less than two minutes later, when he redirected a shot from the point past Kania for the two-goal advantage at the first intermission.
Smith notched his third of the game at 2:27 in the second. Kania was able to stop Macmaster on the initial attempt, but Smith was there to clean up the rebound for the hat trick.
Priskie scored on Quinnipiac's second power play of the night at 8:24 before Macmaster scored later in the period, giving the home side a five-goal lead at the end of the second.
Brown opened the third period on the power play after Priskie was called for a trip during the final second of the middle period. Brent Beaudoin (Londonderry, N.H.) put a shot on net during the power play but the Bobcats killed the penalty to keep Brown off the board.
The Bears killed two more penalties and outshot the Bobcats, 7-6, in the final period, but the Bobcats turned away a flurry of late shots to preserve the shutout.
