
Women's Hockey Ousted at Union, 6-3

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - The Brown women's hockey team was defeated by Union, 6-3, in its first league game of the season on Friday at Messa Rink. The Dutchwomen recorded two goals in each period to skate away with the victory while Brown generated a goal in each frame that included freshman Kaitijane Blumberg's (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) first-career goal.
The Bears (0-3-0, 0-1-0 ECAC) took a 1-0 lead just 3:49 into the contest when sophomore Sena Hanson (New Brighton, Minn.) put in her first goal of the season with the help of senior Sam Donovan (New Brighton, Minn.) and junior Cara Najjar (Stoneham, Mass.). Almost halfway through the opening period, Union tied it up, 1-1, with a power-play score from Hannah Schultz at 8:21.
Union (1-5-1, 1-0-0 ECAC) claimed a 2-1 advantage at 10:24 when Katelynn Russ tallied a short-handed goal, and the Dutchwomen would hold on to that lead heading into the break.
Sophomore Calla Isaac (Sherwood Park, Alberta) contributed 12 saves in the first while Union's Coco Francis made eight stops. The Dutchwomen were 1-for-1 on the power-play while the Bears were 0-for-2. Union also held a 14-9 edge in shots for the frame.
Brown got back on the board and knotted the game (2-2) at 12:40 of the second when sophomore Alley Rempe (Calgary, Alberta) registered the goal while sophomore Veronica Alois (Andover, Mass.) and Blumberg logged the assists.
Union again took advantage of its specials team's unit as Schultz recorded her second power-play goal of the outing at 17:45 for a 3-2 Union lead. Helen Markovic gave the Dutchwomen a two-goal advantage (4-2) just before the period ended at 19:41.
Shots were even for both teams in the second at 10-10. Union again capitalized on the power-play and was 1-for-1 in the stanza while Brown was 0-for-1 on its lone chance.
The Dutchwomen added their fifth goal of the game just 33 seconds into the third (Katelynn Russ). Brown got one back when Blumberg scored her first-collegiate goal at 9:06 while the Bears were on the power play. Alois and senior Samantha Swanstrom (Ham Lake, Minn.) assisted the score.
Union halted a Brown comeback when Haley Shugart scored at 17:47, bringing the score to 6-3.
Brown outshot Union in the third, 15-7, and edged the Dutchwomen for the game, 34-31. The Bears were 1-for-2 in the period on the power-play and 1-for-5 in the contest while Union was shut down by Brown on its lone power-play attempt in the third, but went 2-for-3 for the game.
Senior Julianne Landry (Hanover, Mass.) entered in the third for the Bears and came up with five saves. Isaac exited with 20 saves while Francis made a total of 31 saves for Union.
Blumberg finished with a goal and an assist while Alois joined her with a two-point effort of her own on two helpers.
The Bears are back in action tomorrow (Oct. 28) at RPI for a 3:00 p.m. contest at Houston Field House.
