TROY, N.Y. - The Brown women's hockey team was defeated by Rensselaer, 4-1, at Houston Field House on Saturday. Sophomore Alley Rempe (Calgary, Alberta) scored in her second-straight game but it wasn't enough as the Engineers capitalized on the power play, generating two scores off of the opportunities in the third period.
The contest remained scoreless after the first period with a back and forth frame that saw no penalties. Freshman Lauren Rippy (Plymouth, Mich.) started her second game in goal for the Bears and made 15 saves in the stanza while Lovisa Selander of RPI stopped 11 shots.
The second period was a lot different from the first, with four penalties called and the first penalty shot whistled against the Bears since the 2014-15 season. RPI's Shayna Tomlinson was awarded the penalty shot and gave the Engineers a 1-0 lead at 3:50 with the tally. Brown evened the score at one with a goal from Rempe at 10:30 in front of the net following a faceoff win from freshman Kaitijane Blumberg (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.). The teams would remain knotted going into the final intermission.
Brown (0-4-0, 0-2-0 ECAC) was 0-for-1 on the power-play in the second while RPI (3-4-1, 1-0-1 ECAC ) was 0-for-2. The Engineers had a slight 10-9 advantage in shots for the period.
The Bears were called for a penalty at 2:16 of the third and the Engineers were quick to take advantage, netting the go-ahead score at 2:39 (Josefine Hansen). RPI increased its advantage to two goals (3-1) at 11:26 with another power-play score from Makenna Thomas.
Brown pulled Rippy at 17:42 to try to get one back but RPI sealed its win with an empty net tally by Jaimie Grigsby at 18:45. Rippy concluded the game 31 saves, tying her career-high, while Selander had 26 saves.
The Engineers were 2-for-2 on the power-play in the third and finished 2-for-4 in the contest while the Bears' lone power-play opportunity came in the second period.
Rempe and Blumberg have now registered at least one point in the last three games. Rempe finished the weekend with two goals while Blumberg recorded one goal and two assists in the two games.
Brown next returns home to Meehan Auditorium to host a pair of ranked opponents in No. 7/8 St. Lawrence and defending NCAA Champion, No. 2/2 Clarkson, on Friday, Nov. 3 and Saturday, Nov. 4, respectively. The game against the Saints will begin at 6:00 p.m. while the contest versus the Golden Knights will start at 3:00 p.m. Both games will be broadcast on the Ivy League Network.
