HAMILTON, N.Y. - The Brown field hockey team closed out non-conference play for the 2017 campaign with a 2-1 setback against Colgate at Tyler's Field on Sunday afternoon. The Raiders took a 2-0 lead in the first half and were able to hold on while the Bears' second half effort pulled them within one.
Brown's (1-14) offense started making a scoring push halfway through the first period as sophomore Corinne Condie (St. Louis, Mo.) had a one-on-one with Colgate goalie Maria Krull and got past her, but Josie Cook was there to come up with a defensive save at 16:20. The Bears kept the pressure on and had two more solid chances, with freshman Anagha Nayak's (Ann Arbor, Mich.) shot going wide while Condie's strike was saved.
Brown had a penalty corner at 19:00 and patiently passed the ball around to find open sophomore Gina Openshaw (Annapolis, Md.), but her shot went wide.
Colgate (4-11) was the first to get on the board and did so at 24:27 when Anne Marijn collected a rebound. The Raiders soon increased their lead to 2-0 with a score from Michaela Corvi and took that lead into the break.
The Raiders were whistled for a green card at 50:43 and the Bears took advantage as freshman Lexi King (Granby, Conn.) netted her first collegiate goal at 53:37 when she collected a loose ball to bring the Bears within one (2-1).
King's goal gave the Bears momentum as they quickly registered two mores shots on goal that were saved. Krull later made a key save on Anagha Nayak's attempt at 58:41.
With time winding down, Brown was awarded a corner at 68:12 but Krull again came up with a save, stopping Openshaw's attempt to give Colgate the victory.
Junior Katie Hammaker (Ephrata, Pa.) concluded the match with four saves while Krull made seven stops for the Raiders.
The Bears held a 15-9 advantage in shots for the game and took five corners in comparison to the Raiders' two.
Brown will next play in its final home game of the 2017 campaign, the team's Senior Day, on Saturday, Oct. 28 against Penn. The game is set to begin at 12:00 p.m. at Goldberger Family Field, with the senior ceremony starting before the contest.
Video of all Brown field hockey home contests and all Ivy League games, home and away, will be broadcast live on the Ivy League Network.
