
Field Hockey Edged by Cornell in Overtime, 2-1

ITHACA, N.Y. - The Brown field hockey team used a second-half goal by sophomore Gina Openshaw (Annapolis, Md.) to tie the contest 1-1 and eventually force overtime in an Ivy League battle, but Cornell was able to score the the game-winner two minutes into the extra period to lift the Big Red to a 2-1 win at Dodson Field on Saturday afternoon.
Cornell (8-5, 2-3 Ivy League) struck first in the match and netted a score at 6:03 with Sam McIlwric recording the tally. Junior Katie Hammaker (Ephrata, Pa.) had a strong half in goal that included several saves in a rapid fire sequence.
In total, Hammaker concluded the first with seven saves. Each team ended the frame with one penalty corner.
The Bears (1-13, 0-5 Ivy League) tallied the equalizer at 40:16 when junior Rachel Lanouette's (Windham, N.H.) shot off a penalty corner was saved but Openshaw collected the rebound and fired in her second goal of the season.
In the overtime period, Krysten Mayers recorded the game-winning goal when she slipped the ball to the far post at 72:54.
Hammaker added six saves in the second half to give her 13 for the contest, one shy of her career high 14. The Big Red recorded five corners to Brown's three in the final regulation period.
The Bears are back in action tomorrow (Oct. 22) at Colgate for a 12:00 p.m. game to close out non-conference play at Tyler's Field.
