Wrestling's LaFragola Wins 184-Pound Weight Class at F&M Open

LANCASTER, Pa. – Brown University wrestling sophomore CJ LaFragola won the 184-pound weight class to lead three place-winners for the Bears at the David H. Lehman Franklin & Marshall Open on Saturday at Schnader Field House.
LaFragola (Little Egg Harbor, N.J.) won all five of his bouts to take first place at 184 lbs. while junior Michael Russo (Jersey City, N.J.) and Jon Viruet (Springfield, Mass.) each finished in fourth place at 125 and 165 lbs. respectively. LaFragola won twice via major decision as part of his title-winning effort.
Russo won five straight matches in consolation competition to earn a spot in the third-place match. He placed at a tournament for the second time this season after claiming sixth at 125 lbs. at the Bearcat Open.
Viruet won five of his first six bouts to make his way to the third-place match. He placed at the F&M Open for the second straight year after tying for third at 16 lbs. last winter. He has placed in three tournaments this season, including third at 174 lbs. at the Bearcat Open and fourth at 174 at the Navy Classic.
Sophomore Tucker Ziegler (Myersville, Md.) tallied four wins at 197 lbs. including three straight wins in consolation competition.
Another eight Bears totaled three wins on the day including senior Steven Galiardo (Chicago, Ill.) who reached the semifinals at 149 lbs.
Other three-win performers for Brown included freshmen Nick Lattanze (Norrsitown, Pa.) and Jimmy Pawelski (Park Ridge, Ill.) at 133 lbs. – who both reached the quarterfinals – junior Zeke Salvo (Baltimore, Md.) at 141 lbs., sophomore Travis Vasquez (Fair Lawn, N.J.) at 149, freshman Matt Lattanze (Norristown, Pa.) and senior William McDonald (Carson City, Nev.) at 157 lbs, and junior Andrew LaBrie (Exeter, R.I.) at 174 lbs.
Freshman Theo Powers (Mexico, N.Y.), junior Charlie Banaszak (Bethesda, Md.), and sophomore Ian Butterbrodt (North Andover, Mass.) each won two bouts and made it to the quarterfinals at 133, 141, and 285 lbs. respectively. Freshman Zach Krause (Plainfield, Ill.) and senior Galloway Thurston (St. Ignace, Mich.) registered two wins apiece at 149 and 174 lbs. respectively.
Next, Brown opens the dual meet portion of its season with three matches – vs. Edinboro (9:00 a.m.), vs. VMI (noon), and vs. Rider (1:30 p.m.) – at the Pitt Duals on Saturday, Jan. 14.
