
Wrestling Tops VMI, Falls to Edinboro, Rider at Pitt Duals

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Brown University wrestling defeated Virginia Military Institute, 33-7, and dropped decisions to Edinboro University, 39-3, and Rider University, 32-9, at the Pitt Duals in the team's first dual meets of the year at Fitzgerald Field House on Saturday.
The Bears (1-2) captured eight of 10 bouts in their victory over the Keydets (1-7). Brown fell to the Fighting Scots (3-3) in its first dual of the day and to the Broncs (6-0) in its final competition of the event.
Four Bears – junior Andrew LaBrie (Exeter, R.I.) and sophomores Travis Vasquez (Fair Lawn, N.J.), CJ LaFragola (Little Egg Harbor, N.J.), and Tucker Ziegler (Myersville, Md.) – all picked up two wins on the day.
Next weekend, Brown hosts its first home dual meets of the season as the Bears take on Bloomsburg (Sat., Jan. 21, 3:00 p.m.), Franklin & Marshall (Sat., Jan. 21, 5:00 p.m., EIWA), and Bucknell (Sun., Jan. 21, noon, EIWA) as part of the team's Alumni Weekend.
Dual 1: Edinboro 39, Brown 3
Ziegler won his bout at 197 lbs., but Brown fell to Edinboro, 39-3, in its first dual meet of the year at the Pitt Duals.
The Bears squared off with a Fighting Scots team that fielded six nationally ranked wrestlers in the meet.
Ziegler picked up Brown's lone victory in the contest, defeating Edinboro's Dylan Roberts via decision, 3-2, at 197.
Junior Zeke Salvo (Baltimore, Md.) pushed the Fighting Scots' Nate Hagan at 141 lbs., eventually dropping a 12-7 decision.

Dual 2: Brown 33, VMI 7
Brown won eight of 10 bouts, including falls from Salvo and Vasquez, to top VMI, 33-7, in its second competition of the day at the Pitt Duals.
After the Keydets pulled within 17-7 midway through the meet, the Bears swept the dual's last five bouts.
Salvo picked up his team-leading seventh fall of the year, pinning VMI's John Reed in 4:36 at 141 lbs. Vasquez tallied his first pin of the season, ending his bout with Alex Rinehart at 149 lbs. in 2:38.
At 133 lbs., freshman Jimmy Pawelski (Park Ridge, Ill.) notched a technical fall, 19-3, against Michael Hulcher while sophomore Jon Viruet (Springfield, Mass.) won via major decision, 13-2, against Cade Kiely at 165 lbs.
LaBrie earned a 9-2 win at 174 lbs., LaFragola gained a 5-2 victory at 184 lbs., and Ziegler won for the second time in as many matches at 197 lbs., 8-2, over Taylor Thomas. Sophomore Ian Butterbrodt (North Andover, Mass.) closed the dual with a 7-1 win at 285 lbs.

LaBrie and LaFragola won back-to-back bouts at 174 and 184 lbs. before Rider pulled out a 32-9 decision over Brown in the Bears' final match at the Pitt Duals.
LaBrie and LaFragola each won for the second straight dual. LaBrie topped Wayne Stinson, 6-1, at 174 lbs. while LaFragola won, 9-5, over Michale Fagg-Daves at 184 lbs.
Vasquez logged Brown's other victory in the dual, topping Gino Fluri, 5-3, at 149 lbs. Viruet challenged No. 5 Chad Walsh at 165 lbs. before Walsh held on for a 5-4 decision. Junior Michael Russo (Jersey City, N.J.) pushed J.R. Wert in a 5-2 setback at 125 lbs.
