
Wrestling Tops RIC, 52-0, Falls to No. 9 Cornell, 35-8, Columbia, 22-14

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown University wrestling defeated Rhode Island College, 52-0, and fell to No. 9 Cornell University, 35-8, and to Columbia University, 22-14, in a trio of dual meets at the Pizzitola Sports Center on Saturday.
The Bears (4-6, 1-4 EIWA) won all 10 bouts – including six falls – against the Anchormen (5-8) while dropping decisions to the nationally-ranked Big Red (8-2, 4-0 EIWA) and the Lions (3-8, 2-3 EIWA) in a pair of EIWA duals that also stood as Brown's first two Ivy League matches of the year.
Sophomore Jon Viruet (Springfield, Mass.) tallied the most impressive win of the day for the Bears, defeating No. 7 Dylan Palacio of Cornell, 14-13, behind a takedown with 12 seconds remaining. Freshman Jimmy Pawelski (Park Ridge, Ill.) and junior CJ LaFragola (Little Egg Harbor, N.J.) each posted technical fall wins against Cornell and Columbia respectively.
As part of Brown's six-pin effort against RIC, junior Zeke Salvo (Baltimore, Md.) registered his team-best ninth fall of the year, and senior Richard Muniz (Corona, Calif.) notched the team's fastest pin of the year in 27 seconds.
Next, Brown competes on Saturday, Feb. 4 at Princeton at 1:00 p.m. and at Penn at 6:00 p.m. in a pair of EIWA and Ivy League dual meets.
Dual 1: No. 9 Cornell 35, Brown 8
Viruet earned a 14-13 win over No. 7 Dylan Palacio at 165 lbs., but Brown fell to No. 9 Cornell 35-8 on Saturday afternoon in an EIWA and Ivy League dual.
Pawelski tallied a 17-0 technical fall win over Jacob Lehr at 133 lbs. before Viruet took a thrilling victory over a top-10 opponent for his team-best 21st win of the season.
Pawelski gave Brown a 5-4 lead in the team score with his technical fall, gaining a 6-0 edge after the first period and a 10-0 margin after two frames before closing out the 17-0 shutout win.
Viruet battled Palacio in the closest match of the meet, pulling out the 14-13 win behind a takedown with 12 seconds remaining. Both wrestlers traded points in the first period with Viruet claiming a 6-5 lead after one with a late escape and takedown.
After Palacio brought an 11-9 advantage into the third period, Viruet notched an escape and a takedown to pull ahead, 12-11, with 1:20 to go. Palacio tied it, 12-12, with 37 seconds left before Viruet registered his decisive takedown with 12 seconds on the clock.
Salvo and sophomore Travis Vasquez (Fair Lawn, N.J.) both pushed their opponents early in the meet dropping 10-5 and 5-3 decisions at 141 and 149 lbs. respectively.

Dual 2: Brown 52, Rhode Island College 0
Brown won all 10 matches, including nine bonus point victories and six falls, in shutting out Rhode Island College, 52-0, in the team's second dual of the day on Saturday afternoon.
The Bears pinned their opponents in four of the last five bouts en route to the victory over the Anchormen.
Salvo posted his team-leading ninth pin of the year at 141 lbs. while Muniz tallied the Bears' fastest pin of the season with a fall in 27 seconds at 165 lbs.
Junior Andrew LaBrie (Exeter, R.I.), sophomores Tucker Ziegler (Myersville, Md.) and Ian Butterbrodt (North Andover, Mass.), and freshman Nick Lattanze (Norristown, Pa.) all recorded falls in the dual.
Junior Charlie Banaszak (Bethesda, Md.) won via technical fall, freshman Matt Lattanze (Norristown, Pa.) took a major decision win, and freshman Trey Keeley (Washington, Ill.) won via decision.
Opening at 125 lbs., Keeley won 11-7 before Nick Lattanze notched a fall in 4:12 at 133 lbs. Salvo posted the Bears' second straight pin with a fall in 4:00 at 141 lbs. Banaszak then won, 16-0, for a technical fall.
Matt Lattanze pushed Brown's lead to 24-0 with a 15-7 major decision at 157 lbs. Muniz proceeded to post his 27-second pin at 165 lbs., and LaBrie followed suit with a fall in 3:44 at 174 lbs.
In the final three bouts, Thurston won via major decision, 15-2, at 184 lbs., Ziegler notched a fall in 3:44 at 197 lbs., and Butterbrodt closed the dual with a pin in 6:26 at the heavyweight spot.

Dual 3: Columbia 22, Brown 14
LaFragola scored a technical fall at 184 lbs. to bring Brown within 15-14 in the team score, but Columbia won the dual's final two matches to take a 22-14 win in the Bears' final dual of the day on Saturday night.
In their second EIWA and Ivy dual of the day, the Bears held a 9-6 lead early in the dual before the Lions won six of the dual's last seven bouts. Two points or fewer decided five of the Bears' setbacks in the dual.
Vasquez and Pawelski also won matches for the Bears alongside LaFragola who won his 18th match of the year.
Keeley tested Johnson Mai at 125 lbs. before dropping a 4-3 decision. Keeley tied the match, 3-3, with a reverse in the third before Mai scored an escape.
After Pawelski won via forfeit at 141 lbs., Salvo dropped a 4-2 decision to Jacob Macalolooy in sudden victory at 149 lbs. Salvo tied the match 2-2 at the end of regulation with an escape prior to Macalolooy winning with a takedown in overtime, tying the team score at 6-6.
Vasquez put Brown back on top, 9-6, with a 5-0 win over Sam Ward at 149 lbs. Vasquez posted a pair of takedowns in the shutout win. Senior William McDonald (Carson City, Nev.) suffered a 4-2 setback to Tyler Ponte at 157 lbs. despite a pair of escapes in the third as the Lions tied the team totals at 9-9.
At 165 lbs., Viruet came within 5-4 in the third period before dropping a 6-4 decision to Tyrel White as the visitors gained a 12-9 lead in the team score.
After Columbia moved ahead 15-9, LaFragola brought the Bears pack within a point, 15-14, with a 23-7 technical fall triumph over Jacob Young at 184 lbs. LaFragola took a 6-2 lead after the first frame and 13-5 edge through two before closing the match with 10 points in the third.
The Lions then won the meet's last two bouts to hold off the Bears' comeback.
