
Women's Basketball Falls at Yale in Series Split, 73-51

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Sophomore forward Erika Steeves recorded 15 points and nine rebounds, but Brown University fell at Yale University in the second game of a home-and-home series, 73-51, on Friday night at the Lee Amphitheater.
The Bears (11-6, 2-2 Ivy) – who won the first game of the series, 76-73, at home on Jan. 20 – trailed the Bulldogs (10-7, 1-3 Ivy) 36-24 at halftime, and the hosts gained a lead as large as 27 points in the second half.
Steeves (Montreal, Quebec) scored her 15 points on 6-of-13 shooting from the floor for her 11th game this season in double figures. She fell one rebound shy of her sixth double-double of the year.
Freshman guard Justine Gaziano (Natick, Mass.) tallied 11 points and four assists and has scored in double figures in all 10 games in which she has played more than one minute on the season.
Sophomore guard Taylor Will (Arlington Heights, Ill.) posted nine points and seven rebounds, sophomore guard Shayna Mehta (San Francisco, Calif.) notched seven points and six boards, and junior guard Megan Reilly (Norwood, N.J.) logged six points and seven boards.
The Bulldogs outscored the Bears in the paint, 50-16, and held the visitors to 25.4-percent shooting (18-of-71) from the field.
After Steeves hit an early 3-pointer to make the score, 9-5, the Bulldogs used a 12-0 run to pull ahead 21-5. Reilly connected on a 3-pointer at the end of the frame to cut the margin to 21-8.
Yale maintained a double-digit edge for much of the second quarter before another triple from Steeves brought Brown within 32-24 with 2:15 to go until the break. The Bulldogs proceeded to bring a 36-24 advantage into halftime.
Gaziano and Mehta each knocked down a 3-pointer inside of the first three minutes of the third quarter, and Mehta later made a layup to cut Brown's deficit to 43-35 midway through the period. The Bulldogs responded with a 10-0 run and took a 54-36 edge into the final quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Yale claimed a lead as large as 27 points at 70-43 with 4:26 remaining.
For Yale, Jen Berkowitz scored 15 points, Megan Gorman posted a double-double on 10 points and 15 rebounds, Tamara Simpson netted 15 points, and Lena Munzer grabbed 12 rebounds.
Next, Brown hosts Cornell on Friday, Feb. 3 at 6:00 p.m. (ILDN/ESPN3) and Columbia on Saturday, Feb. 4 at 4:00 p.m. (ILDN) at the Pizzitola Sports Center in its first full home Ivy League weekend of the season.
