
Track & Field Takes Fourth at Beantown Challenge, DeJournett Sets School Record in High Jump

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown University men's and women's track & field teams both placed fourth at the Harvard Beantown Challenge and Multi-Meet to kick off the 2017 calendar season over the weekend at Gordon Track.
The men's team placed fourth out of eight schools, trailing Rhode Island, UMass Lowell and Rutgers. The women's team also placed fourth, finishing behind host Harvard, Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
The women's team racked up seven all-time top-10 marks, led by senior Shanelle DeJournett (Knoxville, Tenn.), who placed second overall in the pentathlon with 3,640 points for fourth all-time.
In the pentathlon, DeJournett won the high jump with a cleared height of 5-11.25, breaking the school record by three centimeters after she was previously tied for first with Lindsay Taylor '01 at 5-10. DeJournett's record jump is tied for eighth all-time in the Ivy League and currently ranks sixth in the NCAA. DeJournett also took second in the 60-meter hurdles with a personal best time of 8.87 for tenth all-time in program history.
Rookie Zion Lewis (Canton, Ga.) captured first place in the triple jump with a leap of 39-3.75, moving up one spot in the all-time ranks for eighth in program history. In addition, Lewis was runner-up in the 60 meters in her collegiate debut in the event, finishing in a time of 7.61 for second all-time at Brown.
Also in the 60 meters, freshman Kennedy Kerr (West Hempstead, N.Y.) was fifth overall at 7.71 and tied for seventh all-time, while Audrey Holt (Alpharetta, Ga.) was sixth in a time of 7.75 for tenth in program history.
On the men's side, junior Martin Martinez (Waukegan, Ill.) captured first place in the mile as he topped the field of 18 runners with a time of 4:14.07.
Rookie Owen Russell (Attleboro, Mass.) was first in the weight throw with a winning toss of 62-5.25, while rookie Ryan Laudermilk (Riverside, Calif.) was runner-up in the high jump with a cleared height of 6-6.25.
Zack Emrich (North Kingstown, R.I.) was runner-up in the 500 meters in a time of 1:04.04, while Max Haensel (Raleigh, N.C.) was also runner-up in the 400 meters at 49.36.
The Bears will return to action on Friday, Jan. 20 for the Northeastern Joe Donahue Games in Boston.
