PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown University women's soccer sophomore goalkeeper Christine Etzel has earned Ivy League Player of the Week honors and a spot on the TopDrawerSoccer Team of the Week after registering her eighth shutout in nine matches this season, the Ivy League and TDS announced on Monday and Tuesday respectively.
A native of Madison, Conn., Etzel ranks No. 1 in the NCAA in goals against average (0.103), save percentage (0.975), and shutouts (eight) for the season.
This past week she recorded two shutouts and 11 saves over 200 minutes to lead Brown to a 1-0 win over Dartmouth in its Ivy opener and a 0-0 (2OT) draw against Sacred Heart. In the pair of clean sheets, she made four saves against the Big Green and seven stops against the Pioneers.
Over the week, Etzel (5-1-3) moved her career shutout total to 12 career clean sheets and has allowed just one goal over 870 minutes on the season. Her 12 shutouts rank in a tie for fourth on Brown's all-time ledger. Etzel moved into sole possession of third place on the Bears' single-season shutout list and has tallied the program's most clean sheets in a single season since 1986.
An Honorable Mention All-Ivy selection in 2015, Etzel gained Ivy League Player of the Week for the first time after securing Ivy League Rookie of the Week accolades on three occasions as a first-year net-minder.
Next, Brown hosts Columbia in its Ivy League home opener on Saturday, Oct. 1 at 3:30 p.m.
