Providence, R.I. - Brown head football coach Phil Estes has named the leadership for the 2016 Bears' football team with the election of senior defensive end Robert Hughes (Long Valley, NJ) and senior quarterback Kyle Moreno (Pleasanton, CA) as team captains. Estes made the announcement at today's walk-through, prior to the Bears' scrimmage at Yale on Saturday.
"I can't think of two more deserving men to lead our football team," said Estes. "Both are outstanding leaders, and individuals who have shown they are what this team and Brown Bears football is all about."
A two-year starter for the Bears, Hughes has been a mainstay of the defensive line for the past three years, and has appeared in 27 career games for the Bears. He made 17 tackles in 2015 and led the Brown team with three quarterback sacks.
"Robbie Hughes has a long family legacy at Brown and is one of the hardest workers on the team," added Estes. "He has only one speed, 100-percent, both in the weight room and on the field."
Hughes also intercepted a pass vs. Holy Cross, and posted a season high six tackles vs. URI, including two for a loss and a QB sack. Hughes had 15 tackles and a quarterback sack as a sophomore.
Moreno has taken over the quarterback duties in 2016 after throwing for 360 yards and two touchdowns a year ago. He passed at a 62-percent rate last season, completing 28-of-45 passes.
"Kyle is what we recruit at Brown, an all-around complete football player," said Estes. "He's someone who leads, and will assure our team success on the field."
Moreno stood out against Harvard, throwing for 307 yards and two touchdowns against the Crimson, while completing 20-of-31 passes. A dual passing and running threat, he rushed for 78 yards and a touchdown against Dartmouth, including a 30-yard run.
