AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts used a pair of first-half goals to propel past the Brown men's soccer team, 2-0, in Saturday's non-conference tilt at Rudd Field.
Brown drops to 3-2 on the season, while UMass improves to 1-5-1 overall.
The Bears outshot the home team, 17-12, and had more shots on target by a 6-5 margin. Brown keeper Erik Hanson (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) stopped three shots in the loss, while Jorge Becerra made six saves for the Minutemen in the shutout.
UMass broke a scoreless game midway through the first half with a pair of goals in just over a six-minute span. Henry Steinkamp opened the scoring at 23:22 as he found the back of the net on a feed from Konrad Gorich for his first of the season. Alex DeSantis notched a second tally at 29:26 to give the home team a two-goal advantage at halftime.
Brown had a pair chances early in the second half, but Nico Lozada (Dallas, Texas) had his shot blocked and Becerra turned away the rebound attempt from Quinn English (Milwaukee, Wis.) to keep the Bears off the board.
The Bears continued to attack down the stretch with a pair of corner kicks and three shots in the final five minutes of regulation. Nevertheless, all three attempts were blocked as the home side held on for the victory.
Sophomore Matthew Chow (Vancouver, British Columbia) led the team with four shots, including one on target.
Brown returns to the field on Tuesday, Sept. 20 when they visit Boston University at 7 PM.
