PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Sophomore Ellie Seid (Larchmont, N.Y.) recorded two goals and an assist and senior captain Katarina Angus (West Vancouver, British Columbia) tallied one score and an assist to lead the Brown field hockey team to a 5-2 win over Sacred Heart on Friday evening at Goldberger Family Field.
The Bears (2-2) generated a lot of scoring opportunities in the first half, registering 13 shots in the opening period, but carried only a 2-0 lead into the break. It was the second half in which Brown's shots started finding the back of the net, with the Bears scoring three goals in less than 15 minutes.
"I was pleased with our passing sequences," said head coach Jill Reeve. "We were able to create a lot of scoring opportunities today and capitalized on a hand full of them. It was a solid team win."
Brown started the game's scoring quick into the opening half, when Seid tallied her first goal of the game at 3:30 when she collected a rebound off of a penalty corner.
Senior Jaclyn Torres (Andover, Mass.) put the Bears up 2-0 at 23:30 when Angus fed a quick pass to her from the top of the circle, and Torres was able to finish close range.
Shortly into the second half, the Bears scored two goals in less than two minutes to increase their lead to four (4-0). Angus starting the scoring at 41:08 with an unassisted tally while Seid followed at 42:27, also an unassisted goal.
Junior Katherine Kallergis (Lake Forest, Ill.) added Brown's final goal at 54:39 when she received a tip pass from Seid to give the Bears a comfortable 5-0 lead.
Sacred Heart (0-7) generated two goals to close the game, at 56:50 from Rebecca Hauser and at 63:14 from Colleen McAninley.
The Bears doubles the Pioneers' shot total for the game, 18-9, including 11 shots on goal compared to five. Both teams were even in penalty corners at 6-6, with all six of Brown's coming in the first frame.
Sophomore Katie Hammaker (Ephrata, Pa.) picked up the win in net making three saves in the contest while Emily Degennaro made four stops for Sacred Heart. Freshman Allee Ayles (Westwood, Mass.) gained her first collegiate action in goal in the second half, logging 9:42 in her debut. Lauren Musselman also so time in net for the Pioneers.
The Bears return to action this Sunday (Sept. 18) against Colgate for a 12:00 p.m. contest.
