PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Seniors Tyler Long (Clarksville, Tenn.) and Nate Pomeroy (Groton, Mass.) both found the back of the net as the Brown men's soccer team downed SMU, 2-0, on Sunday to close out the Capital City Classic at Stevenson-Pincince Field.

Brown (3-0) and Providence College were named Co-Champions of the Capital City Classic after both went 2-0 over the weekend with equal goal differential. SMU falls to 2-4 on the season, while Georgia State also went 0-2 during the tournament.

Sophomore defender Jack Hagstrom (Middleton, Wis.) was named Co-MVP, while Pomeroy, keeper Erik Hanson (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) and defender Louis Zingas (Warren, Mich.) joined Hagstrom on the All-Tournament Team.

Brown keeper Erik Hanson (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) stopped one shot for his second shutout of the season. Michael Nelson made six saves on the other side for the Mustangs.

Southern Methodist went out on the offensive to open the contest, controlling to opening ten minutes in Brown territory, but the Bears soon leveled out for a scoreless first half. Brown held a 5-4 shot advantage in the opening 45 minutes.

Long put the Bears on the board in the 49th minute with his first goal of the season. Nico Lozada (Dallas, Texas) sent a great ball through the defense to Pomeroy, who raced down the right side and found Long in front for the one-timer.

Pomeroy tacked on another goal at 71:18 for his second tally of the season. The senior captain intercepted a slow-rolling goal kick by Michael Nelson and converted the following shot for the two-goal advantage.

Brown outshot SMU by a 14-10 advantage and won the battle for corner kicks, 6-3.

The Bears open up a five-game road swing on Wednesday when they visit UMass Lowell at 7 PM.
