BUFFALO, N.Y. – Sophomore goalkeeper Christine Etzel posted her second shutout in as many matches to open the 2016 season as Brown University women's soccer earned a 0-0 draw with the University at Buffalo in double overtime at UB Stadium on Thursday night.
In the team's first road game of the year, Etzel (Madison, Conn.) made a career-high nine saves to gain her sixth career clean sheet as the Bears (1-0-1) kept the host Bulls (1-2-2) off the scoreboard over the course of 110 minutes.
Buffalo held advantages in shots (22-5), shots on goal (9-1), and corner kicks (9-1), but Etzel (1-0-1) and the Bears' starting back four of juniors Maclaine Lehan (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and Katy Schmidt (Corvallis, Ore.) and sophomores Nicole Phillips (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif.) and Megan Grant (Carlsbad, Calif.) dealt soundly with all of the Bulls' threats.
Bulls goalie Laura Dougall (0-2-1) stopped one shot on her end of the shutout. Julia Benati led the hosts with 10 shots and five shots on goal.
Etzel made several stops midway through the opening half to keep the Bulls out of the back of the net. In the 19th minute she came off her line to delay an attempt before retreating to make a save. She turned aside a shot off a free kick in the 20th minute before again pouncing off her line to thwart away an attempt in the 25th minute. Etzel parried away a shot with one hand in the 26th minute.
Brown's second-year net-minder maintained her efficiency in the second half, making another four saves. She smothered a low shot in the box in the 61st minute and caught a shot from the top of the box in the 71st minute.
The Bears countered in the latter stages of the match as a header from senior Carly Gould (Hampton Falls, N.H.) went wide in the 90th minute, and junior Mikela Waldman (San Francisco, Calif.) placed a shot on frame in the 104th minute.
In the 109th minute, Etzel stopped an initial bid off a free kick from 20 yards before Gould cleared the ball out of the box.
Brown moved to 1-0-1 all-time vs. Buffalo. The Bears beat the Bulls, 6-0, on Sept. 3, 2006.
