Women's Crew's Madden, Betuel Qualify for U23 World Championships

WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – Brown University women's crew rising junior Cicely Madden '18 and recent graduate Emma Betuel '16 have earned spots on the U.S. U23 national team after taking part in the 2016 U.S. Rowing World Championships Trials at Mercer Lake from Monday to Thursday.
Madden (Weston, Mass.) won the U23 women's single sculls title while Betuel (East Hampton, N.Y.) captured the crown in the U23 lightweight women's single as each qualified for the 2016 World Rowing Championships set for Rotterdam, Netherlands from August 21-28.
Betuel will also compete with the U23 lightweight women's quadruple sculls while fellow alumna Coco Schoeller '15 will race with the senior women's four. Schoeller has trained at the USRowing Training Center in Princeton, N.J., since graduating and will make her first appearance with the senior team at the world championships. She won a gold medal with the U23 women's eight at the 2013 world championships.

Making her first U.S. U23 team, Madden has previously competed on three U.S. junior teams earning two silver medals in the women's quad sculls. She won Thursday's W1x final with a time of 7:50.10, beating Emily Kallfelz by over seven seconds. Madden also took first place in her time trial on Monday, heat on Tuesday, and semifinal on Wednesday.
At Brown, Madden has twice gained All-Ivy honors and has rowed with the Bears' first varsity eight in both of her first two seasons. She won an Ivy title with the 1V8 in 2015 and helped the 1V8 place fourth at the 2016 NCAA Championships.
Betuel qualified for the U.S. U23 team for the second time after finishing fifth with the lightweight women's quad scull at the 2014 world championships. She won the LW1x final on Thursday behind a time of 7:56.36, edging Helena Randle by just over four seconds. Betuel claimed also victories in her time trial on Monday, heat on Tuesday, and semifinal on Wednesday.
A winner of Brown's Marjorie Brown Smith Award presented to the Bears' most outstanding female varsity athlete, Betuel finished her collegiate career with four Ivy titles – three in the second varsity eight and one in the A varsity four. A two-time CRCA Scholar-Athlete, Betuel captured an NCAA championship with the 2V8 in 2015.
The group, under the guidance of coaches John and Phoebe Murphy, helped the Bears claim the Ivy team points trophy in each of the last three years while finishing third, third, and sixth at the NCAA Championships in 2014, 2015, and 2016 respectively.
