Women's Crew's First Varsity Eight Gains Second Team All-Ivy

PRINCETON, N.J. – All nine members of Brown University women's crew's first varsity eight have earned Second Team All-Ivy honors for their performance at the 2016 Ivy League Women's Rowing Championship, the Ivy League conference office announced on Tuesday.
Brown's first varsity eight took second place in its grand final helping the Bears win the team points trophy for the third straight season. The Bears totaled 83 points to win the team trophy, edging Princeton (80), Yale (65), Radcliffe (50), Penn (46), Dartmouth (28), Columbia (24), and Cornell (22).
The members of Brown's first varsity eight included senior coxswain Isabel Runge (Redmond, Wash.), junior stroke Alia Shafi (Lafayette, Calif.), senior 7-seat Muriel Solberg (Rockford, Ill.), junior 6-seat Lia Keyser (Cambridge, Mass.), senior 5-seat Ellie Place (Bellevue, Wash.), junior 4-seat Monika Sobieszek (Stoneham, Mass.), sophomore 3-seat Cicely Madden (Weston, Mass.), senior 2-seat Sasha Tilles (Redmond, Wash.), and senior bow Lucia Petty (Hong Kong).
Place, Shafi, Sobieszek, and Solberg have all earned All-Ivy honors in each of the last three years. The quartet gained First Team accolades in 2015 and Second Team plaudits in 2014. Madden gained First Team All-Ivy in 2015 while Tilles took home Second Team All-Ivy in 2014.
At the Ivy League Championship, Brown took victories in the second varsity eight, B varsity four, and C varsity four while finishing in second in the first varsity eight and third varsity eight, and third in the A varsity four. The Bears won the second varsity eight and B varsity four for the fourth straight year.
After earning an at-large bid, Brown will compete at the NCAA Championships, which will take place at the Sacramento State Aquatic Center in Gold River, Calif., from May 27-29 with the Pac-12 Conference acting as the host.
The Bears stand as one of three schools, along with Princeton and Washington, to appear in all 20 NCAA Championships.
